John Wall has missed about one-quarter of the games since he was the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. He hasn?t been an All-Star. His team hasn?t won more than 29 games in a regular season.
Yet his game ? and his team ? got considerably better when he returned from an injury last season, and he remains the cornerstone of the Washington Wizards, who took the calculated risk Wednesday of signing the point guard to a contract extension. Two people familiar with the deal say it?s a max deal, worth about $80 million over five years.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team?s announcement Wednesday did not reveal financial terms. A news conference will be held Thursday.
"He is the cornerstone of our team," Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said in the team?s release announcing the extension. "And we have clearly expressed our desire to build around him."
Wall was the top overall pick in the 2010 draft after playing one season of college basketball at Kentucky, immediately becoming the prime building block for a Wizards club that now has missed the playoffs each of the past five seasons.
He has averaged 16.9 points, eight assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 35.8 minutes during his career.
Rockets? Jones arrested for hurting homeless man
Houston Rockets forward Terrence Jones was arrested in Portland, Ore., on Wednesday after he was seen stomping on a homeless man?s leg, a police spokesman said.
A police sergeant making sure people remained orderly while they left a downtown club shortly after 2 a.m. saw the 6-foot-9 Jones walk by a doorway where two homeless men were sleeping and yell "Wake Up!" before lifting his foot and stomping on one man?s leg, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland police spokesman.

Jones, 21, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a misdemeanor harassment charge. He was released on his own recognizance and later pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
The homeless man, identified as 46-year-old Daniel Kellerher, had a minor injury that did not require immediate medical attention, Simpson said.
Harris, Mavs work out his return
Free agent Devin Harris has officially rejoined the Dallas Mavericks.
The 10th-year guard was acquired as the No. 5 pick on draft night in 2004 and spent his first 3? seasons with Dallas before a trade with New Jersey that brought Jason Kidd back to the Mavericks.
Harris originally agreed to join Dallas nearly a month ago, but the contract was held up by concerns over a toe injury.

The iPhone 5S release date could see Apple?s new flagship phone share the limelight with the heavily rumoured budget iPhone on September 18, latest reports have suggested.
With reports over the weekend hinting that the iPhone 5S release date would see the eagerly awaited iPhone 5 replacement formally launch on September 6, new claims have suggested Apple?s next-gen smartphone will not be formally unveiled until September 18. Citing an unnamed source, CurrentEditorials has claimed this unveiling will be followed by an iPhone 5S release date on September 27.
While the iPhone 5S is expected to build on the company?s current metal bodied smartphone offering with a new array of innards and features, the latest reports have suggested that the budget iPhone handset will be a ?refreshed iPhone 5.?

DOLAN SPRINGS, Ariz. (AP) ? Flash flood waters swept a tour bus with 33 people aboard hundreds of yards down a wash in northwestern Arizona and the vehicle flipped on its side, but no one was injured, officials said.
The Las Vegas-bound bus was returning Sunday afternoon from a day-trip to the Grand Canyon's west rim when the driver attempted to cross the wash on a rural road.
The high waters pushed the vehicle down the wash for an estimated 300 yards around 1:50 p.m. near Kingman, said Patrick Moore, chief of the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District, which had firefighters at the scene. The crash happened as northern Arizona was hit with a second day of heavy rain.
The area where the bus accident occurred received 0.75 inches of rain in about an hour on Sunday afternoon, said Chris Stumpf, a National Weather Service forecaster in Las Vegas. A flash flood warning was in effect when the accident occurred, he said.
"It was a really strong storm dumping quite a bit of rain ... and it caused flash flooding," Stumpf said. "They were driving on a portion of the road where they shouldn't have tried to drive across. They should not have been driving through there."
Rhonda Ho, operations manager for Canyon Coach Lines, said the bus owned by the Las Vegas-based company was being driven by Joseph Razon, who saw a car right in front of him go through a section of the highway covered by some water.
"He thought, if a car can go through it, I can go through it," Ho said.
"Then he got slammed by a rushing current of water that came out of nowhere," she said. "He was driving in almost neck-deep water and trying to control the bus while it was floating."
She said the driver managed to bring the bus against an embankment so it would stop and passengers could escape. People inside the bus were able to climb out of the driver's side windows and walked to dry land.
"I'm glad the driver kept his cool and everybody got out safely. No one screamed on the bus and everyone kept their cool and that's amazing," Ho said.
She described Razon as a "very professional driver" with a spotless record. He has worked for the company since 2005.
Kingman is near the Arizona-Nevada stateline and about 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The bus passengers and driver returned on another bus to Las Vegas, where Ho was able to speak to the driver.
On Sunday evening, as a tow truck was preparing to take away the bus, it was lying on its side and had grass and other debris hanging from it. Two escape hatches on its roof were opened. Writing on the side of the bus said: "C.H. Destination" and "DBA: Canyon Coach Lines"
The passengers were no longer at the scene. The company had sent another bus to pick them up.
There were some swift-water rescues of stranded motorists Saturday night after a storm dropped nearly 2 inches of rain in about 90 minutes around Kingman, Stumpf said.
The flash flood warning around the accident scene has expired, he said, but there's a chance for more heavy rain and another similar warning on Monday.
The crash happened as Northern Arizona was hit with a second day of heavy rain.
The Arizona Department of Transportation closed an 18-mile stretch of Interstate-40 Saturday night between Flagstaff and Kingman because of the flash flooding.

The SFRBM's Discovery Award is given out every other year to a researcher who has presented significant advancements in the field of redox research. Recipients must be nominated by a SFRBM member with details justifying their consideration. Butterfield was nominated by professor Daret St. Clair of the UK Department of Toxicology, with a seconding letter written by professor Barry Halliwell, from the National University of Singapore.
The Senior Awards Committee evaluated eight candidates that were nominated for the 2013 Discovery Award. Butterfield was recognized for his role as a pioneer in developing and investigating the model of amyloid beta-induced early oxidative stress in the progression of Alzheimer's Disease and Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment. He has been a leader in the field of redox proteomics, having applied these and other tools to unravel relevant targets of brain protein oxidation in neurodegeneration and relevant mechanisms of cancer chemotherapy-mediated cognitive dysfunction. This highly mechanistic and translational work provided relevant contribution as a worldwide reference in this area of investigation.
"Receiving the 2013 Discovery Award from SFRBM is a recognition from my peers for the discoveries and accomplishments from my laboratory in Alzheimer's disease and 'chemobrain,' that reflects the efforts of extraordinarily talented postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates who have been in my laboratory," Butterfield said. "The interactions and collaborations with outstanding scholars at UK and worldwide that I have been fortunate to develop have been instrumental in our laboratory's success that led to this award. I am truly grateful to SFRBM for this recognition. Past recipients of the SFRBM Discovery Award are pioneering giants in the field of free radical biology and medicine, so receiving this award is both personally gratifying and extremely humbling to me to be joining such a group of leaders in this field."
