(AP) ? An ex-Marine who had suffered from depression and once tweeted about killing "everyone I see" opened fire in camouflage gear at a New Jersey supermarket, gunning down two co-workers before he killed himself, authorities said.

Terence Tyler, 23, left his night clerk shift at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township around 3:30 a.m., drove off and returned 20 minutes later to the closed store with a handgun and an assault rifle similar to an AK-47, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About 12 to 14 workers were still there, inputting new prices into the computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle ? shooting at an employee standing outside and firing as he entered the store, blowing out the front windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christine LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Been, 24, Kaplan said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted. I believe everybody in the store was a target," said Kaplan.

Tyler, who began working at the supermarket less than two weeks ago, drew his handgun and killed himself, the prosecutor said.

The motive was under investigation. But family members said Tyler had been discharged from the Marines two years ago after suffering from depression and had never gotten over his mother's death; the five-year anniversary was coming up next week, they said.

And on a Twitter account where he posted in 2009, with a photograph identified by family members as Tyler, he posted about hating Marine life.

"I'm starting to see why plp go on killin sprees," he wrote in October 2009, using the handle (at)Tylerbkstyle . And these m----f----- are reeeeeeally pushin my kill everyone I see button."

At the top of Tyler's Facebook page reads the motto, "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Kaplan and police walked through the shooting scene at the supermarket Friday morning, with two long windows in the front completely shot through. Evidence markers were placed next to broken glass outside the store, in a suburban shopping center about 40 miles south of Manhattan. Several ammunition magazines were recovered along with Tyler's rifle and a .45-caliber handgun, he said.

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union, said many of the employees working escaped the gunfire when an assistant manager got many of them to flee out the back door.

Breen and LoBrutto were both cashiers who normally worked day shifts, but pulled overnight shifts every few weeks to input new price changes, Niccolai said.Tyler began just worked for Pathmark since Aug. 20 as a night clerk stocking shelves.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler. "The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda had regularly worked the overnight shift on Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to take over the shift for her a few weeks ago. "That could've been me," she said of LoBrutto.

Tyler was discharged from the Marines in 2010 after just under two years in the service in Twentynine Palms, Calif., the Marines said. The infantryman from New York City never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

His uncle, Christopher Dyson, said he left after suffering from depression, and a cousin said he had been hospitalized and was never happy with the Marines. Tyler, who also lived in San Diego, left California in June to move to New Jersey, where he lived with his uncle.

"He was a quiet cat, you know?" Dyson said. "We don't know anything that would compel him to do this."

His cousin, Shanteya Dyson said Tyler had not been the same since his mother died of cancer. His father died when he was young.

"That was his best friend. He was always a quiet guy. But he got more quiet. He really didn't speak at all. He was just blank," said Dyson.

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong, who said Tyler was his friend's cousin.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. said Friday the company is "deeply saddened" by the shooting and is cooperating with investigators.

A vigil was planned Friday at Old Bridge School for LoBrutto and Breen, who both graduated from the school. LoBrutto, who was a horn player in the school band, graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Jessica Ruano knew Christina from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," said Ruano, 16. "She was silly. She was sweet."

Talkin' Israel at the RNC

By Nathan Guttman

Condoleezza Rice

For a convention focused on the economy and taxes at a time when foreign policy is hardly considered an issue, any mention of Israel at the GOP gathering is worth noticing.

It may not amount to 15 minutes of fame, but a 95-second video in a tight convention schedule is also something. The video, titled Israel: Cherished Memories, summarizes Mitt Romney?s July visit to Jerusalem with highlights from his speech and the obligatory photo ops at the Western Wall and with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Israel also got brief shout outs in the foreign policy speeches Wednesday of John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

But behind the scenes, Israel is a major issue for all those involved in Jewish politics and Middle East advocacy. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee held receptions for Republican lawmakers and delegates and the Republican Jewish Coalition hosted a salute for pro-Israel elected officials. Taking the stage at the event, the Senators and members of Congress made the case for voting Republican, because of Israel.

?I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats,? said Missouri Republican Billy Long, ?With what Obama did to Bibi Netanayahu, I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats.?

Ted Cruz, who Republicans hope will be the next Senator from Texas, took on the Iran issue, telling the audience that if Iran ?is getting too close? to becoming nuclear, ?I?m sure Israel will act.? He added that in case on an Israeli attack, he?d be ?thankful? because Israel would be acting to protect American security as well.

A more nuanced approach was presented by South Carolina?s Lindsey Graham who sits on the Senate Armed Services committee. Graham told the Forward that a future Romney administration would ?give Iran a clear choice? and that he will ?give red lines to the Iranian regime.?

No one seemed to have the appetite for getting into details. Speakers on the convention podium, including Condoleezza Rice spoke in general about taking back America?s leading role in the world, instead of ?leading from behind,? but did not provide much substance. Advisers to the Romney campaign also avoided wading into the specifics of a future Republican administration?s policy regarding the Syrian civil war, Iran?s nuclear ambitions, or the moribund Israeli ? Palestinians peace process.

Love Every Bite: Banana Bread

I got this recipe off a bag of Namaste Foods gluten-free Perfect Flour Blend. They call it "Best Banana Bread" and it really is the best! No one would even guess it's gluten-free.

I recommend Namaste Foods flour blend as well as the recipe, but in the interest of saving space in my pantry and not having a bunch of different flours/blends in there, I adapted the recipe ever so slightly to use a homemade brown rice flour mix that I like to keep on hand.

If you like, you can add half a cup or so of chopped nuts or seeds to the batter.

Banana Bread (Gluten-Free)? PRINTABLE RECIPE

2 cups brown rice flour blend
1 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
3/4 tsp xanthan gum
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup (packed) brown sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
2 large eggs
3 very ripe bananas - mashed
1/2 tsp vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 325? and lightly spray 9" x 5" loaf pan with non-stick spray.

2. In a medium bowl, mix together flour blend, baking soda, salt, and xanthan gum. Set aside.

3. In a large bowl, mix together sugars and oil. Add eggs, bananas, and vanilla, and stir until well blended. Fold in dry ingredients.

4. Pour batter into loaf pan and bake for 65 to 75 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove bread from pan and cool on wire rack.

Using Fertilizer Wisely Could Help Feed 9 Billion People

News | Energy & Sustainability

Farmers in the U.S. and China should use less fertilizer, freeing it up for application where such nutrients can do the most good

Can the world's existing farmlands provide enough crops to satisfy the hunger of the nine billion people?up from seven billion currently?that demographers predict will be living on the planet by the mid-21st century? Or will more and more forests and other ecosystems have to be cleared to feed all the extra mouths? A new study, published in Nature on August 30, suggests that increasing deforestation could be avoided provided farmers made better use of water and nutrients on land currently under cultivation around the globe. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The central premise of the new analysis is that intensifying agriculture where it already exists is the key to preserving a balance between farming and forests. To do that, the researchers from McGill University in Montreal and the University of Minnesota (U.M.) analyzed the so-called yield gap. That's the difference between what the highest yielding farm or area within a given region can produce?for example, corn?compared with what the average yield is. The difference between this best-practice farm and the average farm is the yield gap.

The researchers then employed national and regional agricultural data from outfits such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the International Fertilizer Industry Association to determine the root causes of these yield gaps. Simply by improving fertilizer application and irrigation, the researchers find that global yields of corn, wheat and rice?the three main staple crops?could be increased by 64 percent, 71 percent and 47 percent, respectively.

"We are not claiming to diagnose the exact management practices needed on any particular plot of land," explains research fellow Nathan Mueller, who led the study from the U.M.'s Institute on the Environment, because local factors such as soils and weather can play an important role. Instead, the goal is to identify what practices might help close yield gaps at the regional or even global level and highlight those areas most in need of intervention.

That list includes the U.S. Great Plains and China, where more fertilizer is used than is strictly necessary. For example, American farmers apply so much fertilizer on Midwestern corn fields that much of it ends up running off, ending up in the Mississippi River and, ultimately, reaching the Gulf of Mexico. There the copious fertilizer fuels a bloom of algae and other microscopic plants that then die. Microbes that consume the dead plants also use all the oxygen available in surrounding waters, creating a vast "dead zone" that is devoid of sea life?an unfortunate side effect of the demand for more maize.

Lessening fertilizer use in the U.S. and China would free up nutrients to be applied to fields in eastern Europe and western Africa with no detriment to American or Chinese people. As it stands, the researchers estimate that some 11 million metric tons of nitrogen fertilizer and five million metric tons of phosphate could be saved annually at present without diminishing current yields. Those savings then could be applied to underachieving areas.

Barclays faces SFO probe on Qatar payments

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's fraud prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into payments between Barclays and Qatar Holding, the British bank confirmed, adding to an ongoing regulatory investigation into dealings between the two parties.

Barclays said on Wednesday that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) started an investigation into "payments under certain commercial agreements" between it and Qatar, confirming an earlier report.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA), Britain's financial watchdog, is already investigating the bank and four current and former senior employees, including finance director Chris Lucas, on whether sufficient disclosures were made about the fees it paid in a 2008 capital raising.

Barclays disclosed the FSA investigation when it released half-year results on July 27. It relates to fees paid to the Qatar Investment Authority on deals in June and November 2008, when Barclays raised 11.5 billion pounds.

The SFO probe differs as it is examining the bank, rather than the bank plus four individuals.

The bank did not reveal which payments between it and Qatar were being investigated by the SFO, although the FSA is expected to share information with the SFO that it has obtained, and both are expected to ask for further information from the bank.

Qatar Holding, the entity involved in the investigation, is a unit of the Qatar Investment Authority, which is the largest shareholder in Barclays with a 6.65 percent stake, according to Reuters data.

The bank is reeling after being fined 290 million pounds by British and U.S. regulators in June for rigging Libor interest rates, sparking criticism about its culture and risk-taking and forcing its chairman and chief executive to quit.

Barclays said on Wednesday management consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group was to support a review into its business practices that is being led by Antony Salz.

Former Deloitte partner Russell Collins was also named as Salz's deputy. The independent report is due by April.

Romney still struggles to attract Latino voters

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? It may have been a partisan barb from a Democrat, but Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's pointed criticism of the array of Hispanic speakers at the Republican National Convention laid bare a truth that could hurt the GOP: Mitt Romney is having a tough time winning over Latino voters.

"You can't just trot out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect people are going to vote for your party or your candidate," Villaraigosa, a U.S. born-Latino and chair of the Democratic National Convention, told reporters Tuesday. He was referring to Republican plans to give airtime this week to prominent Latino Republicans, such as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

"Window dressing doesn't do much for a candidate. It's your policies, your platform. This is a party with a platform that calls for the self-deportation of 11 million people," he said, referring to the estimated number of illegal immigrants living in the U.S.

Romney campaign senior adviser Danny Diaz characterized Villaraigosa's comments as "divisive." He said they were part of the increasingly personal attacks by President Barack Obama's campaign that are designed to distract voters from the struggling economy.

"We are very confident that once our story is told, the vast majority of voters will pull the lever for Gov. Romney, and that we will include strong support from Latino voters," Diaz said.

Prominent Latino speakers at the Republican convention include Rubio, who is set to introduce Romney on Thursday; New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez; Rep. Francisco Canseco of Texas; Sher Valenzuela, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Delaware; Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval; and Ted Cruz, GOP Senate nominee from Texas.

Luce Vela Fortuno, the first lady of Puerto Rico, introduced Ann Romney on Tuesday.

Latino voters could make the difference for both Obama and Romney, given that the election will probably hinge on swing states with large Hispanic populations, such as Florida and Colorado, and is expected to be close. Some 12.2 million Hispanics are expected to vote this November, according to projections by the nonpartisan National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

Latinos heavily supported Obama in 2008, and Romney has made efforts to court them in hopes of winning a larger share of their votes. Earlier this summer, Obama was outspending Romney in advertising directed at Spanish-speaking Latinos. Both campaigns are also posting ads on the Web.

This week, the Romney campaign released a Spanish-language television ad, "Juntos (Together)," in which Romney speaks in English and his words are translated into Spanish with subtitles. The campaign also released a 60-second radio ad this week featuring Romney's son, Craig, speaking in Spanish.

Still, polls consistently show Romney is struggling to gain traction. An Aug. 6-26 Gallup poll showed 61 percent of registered Hispanic voters supported Obama and 29 percent backed Romney.

Romney's campaign has said it is aiming for 38 percent. On Tuesday, Villaraigosa estimated Democrats would get about 70 percent of Latino voters.

There is no shortage of ideas on why Romney is struggling.

In an open letter to the GOP published last week, Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos told Republicans they will lose the Hispanic vote in November and "might be condemned to lose the White House for many decades" due to positions such as Romney's opposition to legalization for undocumented immigrants and his push for self-deportation, an idea that people who are in the country illegally might leave the U.S. on their own if life is made difficult enough for them.

Ramos, who broadcasts in Spanish and is one of the most watched anchors in the United States and across Latin America, said Republicans have squandered commonalities with Hispanics, such as opposition to big government and abortion, and instead made themselves enemies of immigrants.

It's a sentiment shared by Guy Sideboard, who was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Tampa as a boy.

"As a Latino, I believe in hard work," said Sideboard, a bilingual information technician. "But there are many Latinos who don't have many opportunities, and I don't think Romney can relate to them at all."

It took a while to find out what worked for me, and slowly, I got used to so many flavors that now I wonder how did I ever lived without them.

Once, I got a taste of Baby Back ribs and St Louise ribs. It was lip-smacking delicious. But the problem was, both hubby and I were under the impression that it was beef. He of course had no qualms in relishing it. I, on the other hand, looked at it longingly, but just couldn?t bring myself to eat it.

Marinade baby back ribs

Weird are the ways of humans. What could be a problem eating it even if it was beef? I truly can?t explain. I don?t like the taste, or the texture.? I never have managed to develop a taste for it. I guess a lot has to do with how you are brought up. More often than not, subconsciously, that does play a role in deciding much of your lifestyle, choices, and even your food.

So even as my kids and hubby enjoyed those mouthwatering ribs, I picked at my chicken. Then someone told me that St Louise ribs are pork. Yay! I attacked them with gusto. So you can imagine my joy when I discovered that Baby back were, well, just another cut of the same pork !

That day itself I decided to make up for all the lost time. I hunted down recipes for BBQ ribs, and bought them ready made from stores. Eventually I started cooking them from scratch, and finally landed up with this recipe which guarantees a top dollar meal without the mandatory slog accompanying it.

Beware! It?s going to be messy, and delicious. Ditch those knives and forks, and free your fingers. You are going to need them.

Another crock pot gem ? BBQ Baby Back Ribs

Serves: 4

  • 4 medium Racks of Baby back ribs
  • Marinade
  • Combine the following to prepare the marinade:
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1tsp of fennel powder
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes
  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne powder
  • 1/4 tsp of nutmeg powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1 tbsp of Wright?s Liquid Smoke (optional)
  • 2 tbsp BBQ sauce
  • For braising:
  • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 tbsp white wine (optional)
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  1. Wash and pat dry the ribs with kitchen towel.
  2. Coat the ribs well with the marinade.
  3. Refrigerate for two hours to over night.
  4. Transfer the ribs to a deep and large enough Crock Pot.
  5. Cook on slow for 6 hours on the low.

Braise

  1. Combine the ingredients and heat it in a pan, and stir till it becomes a consistently thick syrup.
  2. Fire your grill and place the ribs, cooking them for 10 minutes on each side, basting them with the braising liquid until the ribs are nice glazed.
  3. Alternatively, broil them for 5 minutes, till they are nicely browned.
  4. Apply braising sauce all over, and return to broil for another minute or so, until the braise begins to caramalize. Take care not to burn the sauce.
  5. Serve Hot.
  6. Yummm!

I am still new to timing my recipes. It?s still ?a pinch of this and a dash of that? for me. While grilling/broiling AFTER the ribs are cooked, I strongly advise to use your judgement. For those who are new, the time given are approximate, to feel free to check on the ribs constantly while you broil or grill them.

Bon Appetit!

Foxconn announces $226 million half-year net loss, blames usual suspects

Foxconn announces $226 million halfyear net loss, blames usual suspectsManufacturing behemoth Foxconn (Hon Hai) has announced a record net loss of $226 million on turnover of $2 billion for the first half of the year. Unsurprisingly, it attributed the loss to the European debt crisis, global economic slowdown and its customers "continuous struggle" for market share. While it made a big push to encourage new customers, capacity far outstripped demand. In order to stem the tide, it's relocating some of its Shenzen-based facilities to sites in Northern China -- and it's also in talks with carriers to become an ODM, building white-label smartphones in the same way that Huawei and ZTE do. While the loss isn't a rosy picture, the company does have nearly $2 billion stashed in the bank, so it shouldn't be worrying too much.

Persian Rugs at the speed of knots! ? What Ever It Is

It could be suggested that the most famous of floor coverings are Persian rugs and Persian rugs- since their recognition in the interior design world ? have been created in some of the most beautiful, amazing designs.
Divided into two main sections, Persian rugs are distinguishable by a unique border of one design and combination of colours and an inner- section that usually offsets the outer section by being of a clashing colour and design ensemble. Not for the feint- hearted homeowner, Persian rugs are by no means minimalistic or sleek and are more at home in chinch as opposed to futuristic!
Indeed, Persian rugs can only really ?work? in certain rooms. Some Persian Rugs are geometrically designed; somewhat repetitive which makes them ideal for office spaces whilst other Persian rugs feature plants, flowers, animals and other natural elements which would enhance either a conservatory or living area.
But never judge a book by its? cover! Not to be pigeon- holed as one- dimensional standard soft furnishings, Persian rugs- whilst undeniably beautiful ? are also steeped in traditional values and culture.
If you take a good look at Persian rugs, you will notice that they all feature ?central medallions? and no central medallion is the same as another. The central medallions positioned on Persian rugs are usually spiritual and symbolic of faith; the inspiration for which comes from the domes of the Mosques.
Not dissimilar in creation, Persian rugs are made by hand using a knotting technique that is unique to all forms of oriental rugs. Incredibly, some of the best quality Persian rugs may contain in excess of 50 knots per square cm whilst low to average Persian rugs contain approximately 30 knots. Knotting, to produce Persian rugs is an arduous, time consuming task and with craftsmen knotting on average 10,000 knots per day, should not be left unrecognised for the skill and workmanship that goes into handcrafting Persian rugs for the worldwide consumer.

Instead of trying to use the Internet to attract customers from all over the world, Total Web Design marketing experts use pay per click advertise tools to connect local craftsmen to clients searching for their services. This type of online marketing tool is one of the best kept secrets used by large advertising firms for developing new product lines, testing landing pages and capturing new clientele.

?

Craftsmen are always looking for new ways to get new clients. Total Web Designs has a track record of squeezing out the most value for each marketing dollar invested in pay per click advertise campaigns. Their process helps craftsmen such as welders, landscapers, and handymen define their marketing goals and match them to proven strategies that work to attract new business.?

?

Pay per click advertising, also known as PPC, are the small ads shown at the top or down the right side of a page of search results. Businesses create these ads and pay a fee to Google to advertise. The fee is generated every time someone clicks the pay per click advertisement. That click takes the potential customer to a sales page or website.?

?

This is a great concept, but like anything, it can be an expensive tool when handled by people who have little experience with pay-per-click advertising. Whenever someone clicks on one of these ads, a fee is charged. The fee can be pennies or upwards of $70 per click. The rate depends on several factors.? This is where novices discover that their lack of experience can cost them money.?

?

Total Web Design?s marketing manager, Ray Giridharan, shared that, ?Businesses new to pay per click advertising can really run through a marketing budget when they don?t fully understand the rules and strategies behind Google?s pay per click advertising.? Mr. Giridharan shared that while his company doesn?t have insider knowledge on all the parameters behind Google?s PPC model, they make use of best practices and years of experience using pay per click advertise marketing. Businesses looking for new strategies to attract local clients are invited to contact Total Web Design to see if pay per click is a match for their business. Miley Cyrus ?thinks lesbians are awesome? - PinkNews.co.uk

According to new reports, not only does Miley Cyrus not mind jokes about her haircut making her seem to be ?leaning towards gay? she ?loves? lesbians, and takes it as a compliment.

An anonymous friend of Cyrus told HollwoodLife:

?Miley isn?t a lesbian at all but she takes it as a compliment. Lesbians are awesome and courageous and she loves them.

?Her hair is just an edgy style that she loves and it?s something she thought of on her own. She isn?t hurt or otherwise offended by people talking about her hair negatively, and she doesn?t think that being called a lesbian is a bad thing at all.?

Last week, Evan Rachel Wood had tweeted, with reference to Miley Cyrus? new, short haircut: ?I called it! Miley cyrus is leaning toward gay.?

Wood took to Twitter to defend herself, to explain that she meant no harm, and that she only ever intended the tweet as a joke for friend, Miley.

An active gay rights advocate, Cyrus recently criticised the president of Urban Outfitters for anti-gay campaign support, has received hate mail for her support of gay rights?and she recently got a tattoo representing the sentiment ?equal love for?all.?

Apple's $1 billion verdict against Samsung: What's next for consumers?

Battle between two tech giants is not over: Apple plans to call for Seoul-based Samsung to take its most popular cellphones and computer tablets off the market and is asking the judge to triple damages to $3 billion. Samsung vows to fight on to overturn the verdict.

By Paul Elias,?The Associated Press / August 25, 2012

A Samsung customer waits at its service center in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. Apple Inc scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung on Friday, as a US jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.05 billion in damages.

Apple Inc.'s $1 billion legal victory could mean fewer smartphone options for consumers to choose from, analysts said.

A federal jury's verdict Friday that Samsung Electronic Co. stole Apple's technology to make and market smartphones using Google's Android software sends a warning to other companies manufacturing similar devices, the biggest marketplace threat to Apple.

"Some of these device makers might end up saying, 'We love Android, but we really don't want to fight with Apple anymore,'" said Christopher Marlett, CEO of MDB Capital Group, an investment bank specializing in intellectual property. "I think it may ultimately come down to Google having to indemnify these guys, if it wants them to continue using Android."

That's if the verdict stands. Samsung, the Seoul-based global leader among smartphone makers, vowed to fight. Its lawyers told the judge it intended to ask her to toss out the verdict.

"This decision should not be allowed to stand because it would discourage innovation and limit the rights of consumers to make choices for themselves," Samsung lead lawyer John Quinn said. He argued that the judge or an appeals court should overturn the verdict.

Apple lawyers plan to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages from $1.05 billion to $3 billion.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will decide those issues, along with Samsung's demand she overturn the jury's verdict, in several weeks. Quinn said Samsung would appeal if the judge refuses to toss out the decision.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

The jury on Friday rejected all Samsung's claims against Apple, but also decided against some of Apple's claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue.

It found that several Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

The US case was the latest skirmish in a global legal battle between the two tech giants. Its outcome is likely to have ripple effects in the smartphone market. Other device makers relying on Android, the mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given for free to Samsung and other phone makers, may be more reluctant to use the software and risk getting dragged into court.

During closing arguments, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung had a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives were determined to cash in illegally on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyers countered that it was legally giving consumers what they want: smartphones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate Apple's patents and alleged innovations claimed by Apple were created by other companies.

Samsung said after the verdict that it was "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners."

"This is by no means the final word in this case," Quinn said in a statement. "Patent law should not be twisted so as to give one company a monopoly over the shape of smartphones."

The jurors' determination that Samsung took Apple's ideas probably matters more to the companies than the monetary damages, Marlett said.

"I don't know if $1 billion is hugely significant to Apple or Samsung," Marlett said. "But there is a social cost here. As a company, you don't want to be known as someone who steals from someone else. I am sure Samsung wants to be known as an innovator, especially since a lot of Asian companies have become known for copying the designs of innovators."

Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales. Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.

Samsung's Galaxy line of phones run on Android, and ISI Group analysts viewed the verdict as a blow to Android as much as Samsung.

If Android lose any ground in the mobile computing market, that would hurt Google, too. That's because Google relies on Android to drive mobile traffic to its search engine and services to sell more advertising.

Google entered the smartphone market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip-off of the iPhone's innovations.

After shoving Schmidt off Apple's board, Jobs vowed that Apple would resort to "thermonuclear war" to destroy Android and its allies.

The Apple-Samsung trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by the judge to settle the dispute out of court. Legal experts and Wall Street analysts had viewed Samsung as the trial's underdog. Apple's headquarters is just 10 miles from the San Jose courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley, where Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.

A verdict came after less than three days of deliberations, surprising observers who expected longer deliberations because of the case's complexity.

While the issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak has said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believed Samsung's products look and feel like Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Samsung's lawyers argued that many of Apple's claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple's reputation as an innovator.

Apple's lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had developed much of the Apple technology at issue.

Apple and Samsung have filed similar lawsuits in South Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia.

"This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims," Samsung said in its statement.

Samsung won a home court ruling earlier Friday in the global patent battle against Apple. Judges in Seoul said Samsung didn't copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

But like the jury in California, South Korean judges said Samsung violated Apple's technology behind the "bounce-back" feature. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents. Samsung's claims previously were shot down by courts in Europe, where judges ruled that Samsung patents must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for computer tablets and smartphones.

Associated Press writers Michael Liedtke in San Francisco and Sam Kim in Seoul contributed to this report.

Apple awarded over $1bn in epic US - World News Tomorrow

World News

WORLD NEWS ? Samsung was dealt a blow late last night when the jury in its patent case against Apple ruled in favour of the Cupertino-based company on a number of key claims and awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages ? that?s in excess of ?630 million in old money.

Samsung, meanwhile, lost its patent claims and was not awarded any damages.

The jury found that Samsung infringed on a number of Apple design and utility patents with a variety of its devices, from the Fascinate to the Galaxy S2. Samsung prevailed on some of the devices in question, but it lost on many more.

The jury found that Samsung willfully infringed on five of the six Apple patents in question, and awarded $1.05 billion in total damages.

Those damages covered infringement on devices like the Samsung Epic 4G, Captivate, Galaxy S2, Indulge, the Vibrant, and more ? not all of which are available in the UK.

Jurors debated for several days before returning their verdict around 23:00 GMT last night. Given the scope of the case, it took just about a half hour for the entire verdict to be read.

Lawyers for both sides are currently reviewing the verdict before Judge Lucy Koh will allow the jury to leave. Stay tuned for more details on the verdict and its implications.

The case dates back to April 2011, when Apple sued Samsung for ?slavishly? copying the iPhone and iPad with its Galaxy lineup of devices. Samsung countersued and the case has since spread to dozens of courts around the globe. Apple has had some success in getting the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab banned in various regions, but it is the California trial that had everyone watching.

Homely One: Our First Holiday As A Family Of Four

Last week, as I spent what felt like forever packing all of our bags to take with us, my enthusiasm for our family holiday was seriously lacking, despite us having looked forward to this one for months. ?Sophie had been up most of the night before (I was assuming with teething pain) and as I battled to keep my eyes open the following day, I had visions of our idyllic break turning pear-shaped. In the end, I was glad we got away though. ?It was refreshing to have a change of scenery and lovely to spend some quality time together. ?Grace especially had such fun down south, channelling her inner Dr Doolittle as she 'talked' to all the farm animals, stomped through creeks in her gum boots and looked out for kangaroos in the paddocks. ?Seeing the smile on her face each day as we set out on various adventures was priceless.
I've posted before about our family holidays to Denmark. ?It's our little 'home away from home' and has even ?more meaning for Paul who lived there for several years as a young boy. ?Each time, as we drive into town along the scenic country roads lined by breathtaking forests and lush green paddocks, I feel a wave of serenity wash over me. ?I love re-visiting our favourite spots, finding new places to explore and soaking in all the fresh air and beauty in the surrounding landscape. ?It truly is a magical spot.

This time, seeing as our family had grown by one and our needs were a bit different, we chose to stay in self-contained accommodation at Kangaroo Valley Cottage. ?It was perfect - the picturesque views, the warmth of the log fire, the country kitchen and the surrounding farm animals and wildlife have made this a place we are definitely keen to return to again next year.

During our stay, we returned to Grace's beloved animal farm where she once again was in her element feeding, patting and cuddling all the animals. ?We also let her bring along her money box which she'd been filling over time and allowed her to spend the money she had saved on something of her choice. ?We also took a drive to Albany one morning where we had Devonshire tea at Emu Point Cafe and another afternoon, we stopped for a drink and play at the Boston Brewery at Willoughby Park Winery. After time away though, I always love returning to the comforts and convenience of home which make our simple days and routines so much easier. ?For the remainder of this week while Paul has still had time off, we've gotten back into the swing of our simple daily rhythm, completed a few odd jobs around the house and even managed a visit to Ikea. ?It's been wonderful waking up every day this week feeling like it's the weekend. ?I'll be sad when Monday rolls around...

Greener cars have improved L.A. air quality

Smog-producing compounds in Los Angeles are down 98 percent since the 1960s. They're down by half just since 2002, thanks to higher-mileage cars.?

Given the length of time the?U.S. Government is taking to set new gas mileage standards for 2025,you?d be forgiven for thinking the only benefit from driving a high gas-mileage?car?is the savings you make at the pump.

You?d be wrong.

Driving high gas mileage cars equates to lower tailpipe emissions, less air pollution, and a healthier population.

And now there?s data to prove it.?

According to the?latest study?from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -- (via?TreeHugger) -- air pollution from car exhausts is down by 98 percent compared to the 1960s.

Although gasoline use in LA is almost triple that of what it was in the 1960s, the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air has dropped from around 100 parts per billion to just 2 parts per billion.?

Between 2002 and 2010 alone, the amount of VOCs in the air of LA halved.?

Of course, VOCs aren?t the only pollution to come from an exhaust.

As the study points out, however, VOCs are a major cause of ground-level ozone, which not only causes smog, but can cause respiratory diseases.?

Since its enactment in 1963, the Environmental Protection Agency?s Clean Air Act, and its various amendments, has tackled air?quality, legislating on emissions from everything from factories to airplanes and the automotive industry.

From 1975, for example, it mandated every?new?carsold in the U.S. have a catalytic converter, designed to improve car emissions.?

As data from the NOAA attests, the period between the mid 1970s and early 1980s saw a steady, marked drop in VOCs measured in the air of Los Angeles.?

Of course, California doesn?t just have the EPA to thank for an improvement in air quality.?

The Californian Air Resources Board, set up in the late 1960s, has played a large part in improving Los Angeles? air quality, through the implementation of even tougher air quality standards.?

Among them, stricter emissions targets for automakers, and mandates that mean automaker who want to sell cars in the state have to produce a specific percentage of low and zero-emission cars.?

The results are clear to see.?

?Requirements for catalytic converters, use of reformed fuels less prone to evaporate, and improved engine efficiency of new vehicles have all likely contributed to overall declines in vehicle-related pollution, including VOCs,? the NOAA says in its study.?

There?s more good news too.?

Even though the number of cars in Los Angeles continues to climb, perpetuating the city?s image as one of the most congested places in the U.S., gasoline use in LA has started to fall, after hitting a peak around 2008.

That?s a clear indicator that people are driving less, and buying the cleanest, most?efficient?cars ever.?

So next time you look at a new car remember this: the higher your car?s gas mileage, and the lower its tailpipe emissions, the more easily you -- and your family -- will be able to breathe.?
