Windows Phone OS mod speeds up app load times, knows you'll play Monopoly on your break (video)

Experimental Windows Phone mod Falcon speeds up app load times, knows you were going to do that

Microsoft Research has revealed some of its latest work into mobile app optimization -- and it's called the contextual solution, Falcon. Fast App Launching with Context aims to improve "key OS services" including memory management, scheduling and security. It does this by using location and sci-fi-sounding "temporal access patterns" -- when you use the app -- to pre-load programs before you've even decided to use them, which dramatically reduces perceived loading delay. A learning algorithm baked into the Windows Phone OS mod also improves its behavior and predictive powers as you use it. In the project's own tests, users were apparently saving up to 35 seconds on a single app launch. There's no news on whether the developmental mod will find its way into future Windows Phone iterations, but if our phone just knew to pre-load Kinectimals each morning -- the only thing that gets us through those 7am commutes-- we'd be more than willing to give it a go.

Valve employee spills the hardware beans: wearable computers, ahoy

Valve employee spills the hardware beans: wearable computers, ahoy
When Michael Abrash started working for Valve, he expected the higher-ups to hand him a pile of work and tell him to hop to it. They didn't. Instead, he was told to figure out the most valuable thing he could do for the company, and then do it. So, Abrash wound up kicking off an in-house R&D project for wearable computers, and according to a recent blog post, is looking to expand his research team. More than me-too mice and gamepads, indeed. Abrash is quick to put a lid on rumors of "Steam glasses," however, and warns readers not to expect any big reveals at E3 -- this is just an "initial investigation into a very interesting and promising space," he says, and is more "research than development." Rearing to give Google's Project Glass a run for its money? Or maybe you're just itching for a detailed narrative of employee and employer? Either way, you'll find what you're looking at the source link below.

Groupon Remains "Confident," New Investors Reconsider Investing ...

Dear media: All those puns about Groupon "not being such a good deal anymore" are real clever. Please keep 'em coming!

Indeed, scanning the headlines this morning for this post, there's been a definite uptick in the amount of naysayers coming out to kick Andrew Mason's company when it's down, as if all these unfortunate developments are somehow a big shock. Of course it's worthwhile unpack what went wrong, but it's equally important to figure out where things go from here.

Yesterday I joked that now is the time to invest in Groupon, but there was a grain of truth to that joke if you have an iron stomach. Crain's is reporting on Tuesday that Groupon actually has a shot at courting new investors if it can right itself here. Clearly, it's a big risk, since Groupon's stock is whimpering its way closer to $10 ($13.54?as of press time), but it's actually giving large institutional investors who previously passed on the IPO paused and occasion to reconsider.

David Rudow, a senior analyst at Minneapolis-based mutual fund Thrivent Asset Management, which passed on Groupon's IPO told Crain's:

"We're going to relook at it? they're in the penalty box now? it usually takes a couple quarters of solid results to get out. So now's the time if you didn't own it, you do the work on it because it's out of favor. Now is the time the real investors will step in and look at it? the guys who are buying now will ask the tough questions.??

Certainly, there's no shortage of tough questions to ask. The toughest of all? What will the answers be, if there are any?

According to Groupon CFO Jason Child -- who reportedly got a raise April 1 -- the company is "confident in the fundamentals of our business." Or at least, that's what he said on March 30 in an investor statement issued March 30. I don't know about you, but if you realized you had $14.3 million less than you said, is "confident" really the word you'd use??

ABC announces 'General Hospital' will stay on air

By Alex Ben Block, The Hollywood Reporter

It wasn?t as easy as ABC, but the Disney-owned broadcast network has given renewed life to its last soap opera, "General Hospital," while making moves to set the stage for the arrival of Katie Couric?s talk show in September.

Also making the cut is "The Chew," a food-oriented talk show that has been on since September and has attracted enough viewers on a regular basis to at least generally equal "All My Children,"?the long-running soap opera it replaced.

The loser in the shuffle is "The Revolution," a health and lifestyle talk show that never seemed to find an audience since its debut in January. It will end in July.

More from THR: ABC sets summer premiere dates

ABC confirmed the changes Wednesday.

After "The Revolution"?departs and until "Katie" arrives in September, the ABC-owned stations will carry "GMA?in?the Afternoon," a spinoff of the morning franchise "Good Morning America," which will feature many of the same personalities. The afternoon show is likely to carry lighter fare except when there's a breaking news story.

"Good Morning America" has been making headway in the ratings and recently even topped its archrival, NBC's?TODAY.?That was on one day last week when Couric guest-hosted, a positive sign for her weekday syndicated strip.

(TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

"Katie," which premieres Sept. 10, will probably air at 3 p.m. on the ABC stations as well as on most other stations. The show, executive produced and run by former NBC topper Jeff Zucker, is expected to be a lifestyle talk show with a strong news flavor in keeping with Couric?s background and interests.

More from THR: 35 most powerful people in media

The "General Hospital" news is great for soap opera fans who complained after ABC last year announced the cancellations of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," both of which ran for more than 40 years. This time, the network emerges as the good guy while still finding room for "Katie."

Brian Frons, who was in charge of ABC daytime when "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" were axed, has left the network. This new plan comes under Vicki Drummer, the executive vp who replaced him, and was approved by network boss Anne Sweeney.

A lot of the changes came about after "The Oprah Winfrey Show" went off the air. Winfrey's show was a mainstay on the ABC stations for 25 years. When she left, many of the stations extended their news shows to begin at 4 p.m., and there was resistance from those stations to give that time back. Now the hour "Katie" needs has been carved out without upsetting the stations.

"General Hospital, meanwhile, has been showing signs of renewed life in the ratings as it approaches its 50th year on the air, in part because fans of other soap operas needed a place to land. In late March, it was drawing more than 2.2 million viewers a day, respectable for the afternoon slot in a competitive marketplace.

"The Revolution," on the other hand, has been stuck on about 1.3 million viewers a day. It is hosted by Tim Gunn, known for "Project Runway"; fitness trainer Harley Pasternak; designer Ty Pennington; Dr. Jennifer Ashton; and Tiffanie Davis, who offers advice to women.

Lesley Goldberg contributed to this report.

New York Lawmakers Consider Medical Marijuana Legislation

OREGON--(ENEWSPF)--April 9, 2012. ?Is medical marijuana coming to New York? I have asked that question several times on this blog. It seems to be a horrible re-occurring case of deja vu. Discussions about medical marijuana start in Albany, there seems to be momentum as the people speak up that they want medical marijuana in New York, then some heartless politicians come in and spread their reefer madness and kill compassionate legislation. Will we have a repeat in 2012?

According to the Wall Street Journal, this time could be different. ?The Wall Street Journal wrote, ?But now, the idea has a new champion in Sen. Diane Savino, a Staten Island Democrat who has allied herself with the chamber?s Republican majority on many issues and is the lead sponsor of a soon-to-be-introduced bill. Ms. Savino and the sponsor in the Democratic-controlled Assembly, Richard Gottfried, said they?re hopeful that they could pass the bill if Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, were to get onboard.?

Governor Cuomo has bashed on medical marijuana in the past, but it appears he has softened, at least according to some Democrats working to bring medical marijuana to New York. ?He hasn?t said no,? Ms. Savino told the Wall Street Journal, referring to Mr. Cuomo. ?He?s willing to have a conversation.? You may remember a?Quinnipiac University?poll in 2010 which found that 71 percent of people polled felt medical marijuana is a ?good idea.??The Wall Street Journal article went on to say, ?According to lobbyists, 28 Senate Democrats are supportive of medical marijuana. While Republicans are overwhelmingly opposed to the bill, advocates say they see a potential for at most a half-dozen GOP votes. The bill would need at least 32 votes for passage.?

As predicted, there is already someone from the Reefer Madness crowd spouting their propaganda. ?There is no control over who is using the marijuana. It opens a Pandora?s box for the illegal use of marijuana,? party chairman Michael Long told the?Wall Street Journal. Mr. Michael Long, can I check your medicine cabinet? If there is even one pill in there that is regularly abused by millions of people in America every day, then you sir are a hypocrite. Pandora?s box was installing marijuana prohibition in the first place. The only thing that has been let out of Pandora?s box is organized crime?s profit margins from marijuana sales, which is rampant in New York. Organized crime will continue to profit off of patients as long as people like Michael Long are still in office making decisions.

?This is not about getting high; this is about getting relief,? Ms. Savino, whose parents and grandfather died of lung cancer, told the?Wall Street Journal. ?It?s incredibly painful. You only have morphine. You get to the point where nothing works.? I feel for you Ms. Savino. I also feel for all of the patients that are stuck in limbo while politicians continue to poster and throw around political rhetoric. People should have to suffer just so politicians can prove their unfounded point that they were brainwashed into believing.

I think Gabriel Sayegh, the New York State Director of the?Drug Policy Alliance, put it best. ?It?s great to see Assm. Gottfried and Sen. Savino re-introduce this legislation. Sixteen other states have the measure already?as does D.C. And two NY neighbors?Connecticut and New Hampshire?look poised to pass similar legislation soon. New York patients shouldn?t have to wait for relief any longer. They?ve waited long enough.? Yes Mr. Sayegh, New York patients have definitely waited long enough. I pray they won?t have to wait much longer.

I really love the idea. =D It sounds great. I'm thinking about adding the goddess of anarchy, though I'm not sure whether that'll be okay? It's just an idea I have, but if you'd rather we keep to the major gods, I would like to reserve Athena, if I could? =)

Investment Mistakes Even Smart Investors Make ? Part 1 of 3 ...

As a high school teacher, I?ve done plenty of reading on educational theory.?

How do kids learn, and how can you make it stick?? If given free reign, I?d like to teach a humanities class with Larry Swedroe and RC Balaban?s latest book, Investment Mistakes Even Smart Investors Make as my core text.

With it, I believe I could blend lessons in psychology, history, literature, mathematics, marketing/business, the stock market and investing.? Best of all, the lessons would all have applicable benefits to the kids, years after they leave the classroom.?

Sound like a tall order??

I don?t think it is.? And I believe any teacher could do it.

School subjects have been taught in isolation for far too long.? We teach history, isolated from English, isolated from math.? Little crossover occurs in the world of academia, and (although I?m embarrassed to admit it) much of what we teach in schools isn?t practical.

With a full year course devoted to a multi-disciplined approach, this book could serve a cross curricular purpose that I doubt even the authors dreamed possible.

Swedroe and Balaban?s work takes readers through 77 mistakes that investors often make with their money.

Psychology and Biology?without Freud

As a college student, I took two psychology classes, hoping to learn what motivated people, how to influence others and simply, what made us tick.? But I learned nothing practical.?

Using Swedroe and Balaban?s book as a launching pad, we could make psychology real?even profitable, and we wouldn?t have to teach it in isolation.

As Swedroe and Balaban point out in their book?s first lesson, people tend to be overconfident when making investment decisions, yet there?s a slight difference between the sexes:?Women investors typically outperform male investors.? And married male investors typically outperform single male investors.

Why?

Simply, men are overconfident and more volatile when it comes to making decisions.? They trade more frequently, and have a higher likelihood of imploding their investment accounts? and their cars, on the open road.

This leads nicely to biology, and testosterone.?

What is testosterone and what are the behavioural side effects of it when injected into athletes?? How do testosterone levels affect men and women differently, behaviourally and biologically?? With a single lesson/project we can grab the budding biologist, the aspiring athlete, the psychologist, and the kid who has just decided that he or she wants to make bucket loads of money.?

These are questions that students could research and present projects on, based on their areas of interest.? And in each case, they would link it to behavioural finance:? how psychology affects investment decisions.?

You don?t have to be a high school student to benefit from Investment Mistakes Even Smart Investors Make.? This is one of the richest, most focused money books I?ve ever read.

And I plan to write two more articles about it, linking its merit to a broader educational platform.

If you haven?t read this book yet, order it through Amazon.? Filled with incredible details and academic evidence, it?s something every investor can benefit from.

If you?ve read my book, Millionaire Teacher, please read Swedroe and Balaban?s book next.? These gentlemen take the same themes to another level.? Its depth will impress you.

?

??Balaban and Swedroe both work for the Buckingham Family of Financial Services; you can also read Larry?s blog at CBS MoneyWatch.?

There is a significant decline in the participation of today?s couples in their local communities.

Sarkisan & Gerstel?s research on marriage and social support networks demonstrate that married couples are less likely to provide assistance to friends or socialize with their neighbors. When people get married, they limit their involvement in their family and community.

So, how are married couples attempting to meet their social, emotional, and relational needs?

They are depending on their marriage partner ? for a lot.

The General Social Survey found that almost 10% of couples solely rely on their spouse to talk about personal issues, and only 15% of individuals have at least 4-5 people in their lives they can trust as confidants.

The research clearly shows that today?s marriages are more insular, placing a heavier burden on spouses in the absence of community support. How can isolated couples thrive under that kind of pressure?

I began today?s blog post with a quote from author Wendell Berry, who writes on the symbiotic relationship between marriages and local communities. Berry suggests that couples willingly offer themselves to their local community, and that the community gathers around each couple ?because it understands how necessary, how joyful, and how fearful this joining is.? From Wendell Berry?s perspective, the hospitable, intimate, and generous relationships couples have with family, friends, and neighbors is critical in how how both marriages and communities are able to thrive.

I wonder, how marriages might look different if they existed for the community around them, and were able to receive an entire community?s support?

I wonder, how local neighborhoods might look different if they benefited from the full participation of couples in community life?

As it turns out, these questions lead us directly to this week?s Relationship 101 vlog challenge!

How has life in community ? or social isolation ? impacted your relationship? Write your thoughts in the Comments, send me an email, or schedule a therapy session.

Hope to connect with you soon!

Snappy Science: Stretched Rubber Bands Are Loaded with Potential Energy!

Key concepts
Physics
Mathematics
Energy
Projectiles

Introduction
If you've ever been shot with a rubber band then you know it has energy in it?enough energy to smack you in the arm and cause a sting! But have you ever wondered what the relationship is between a stretched rubber band at rest and the energy it holds? The energy the rubber band has stored is related to the distance the rubber band will fly after being released. So can you guess one way to test how much energy a stretched rubber band contains?

Background
No mechanical contraption would be any fun if it did not work. But "work," in the physics sense, takes energy. Consider a rope and pulley that bring a bucket up a well. The energy that makes this mechanical system work is provided by a person who pulls up the rope.

There are actually two different kinds of energy: potential energy, which is stored energy, and kinetic energy, which is energy in motion. A great example of the difference between kinetic and potential energy is from the classic "snake-in-a-can" prank. This is an old joke where you give someone a can of peanuts and tell them to open it, but inside is actually a long spring that pops out when the lid is twisted off. Because the spring is usually decorated to look like a snake, this prank usually causes the victim to jump back and shout in surprise! When the snaky spring is compressed and secured inside the unopened can, it has potential energy. But when the can is opened, the potential energy quickly converts to kinetic energy as the fake snake jumps out.

Materials
??? ?A long, wide concrete sidewalk, driveway or other hard surface that you can draw on with chalk (as an alternative, you can make distance markers out of paper and place them on a surface on which you cannot draw)
??? ?Sidewalk chalk
??? ?Metric ruler
??? ?Rubber bands (all of the same length and kind)
??? ?A helper
??? ?Metric tape measure
??? ?Paper and pencil or pen

Preparation
??? ?Find a helper, gather your supplies and go outside to do this activity. You will want a place with a lot of clearance that has a concrete or other hard surface on which you can draw with chalk.
??? ?Your partner will draw circles around where the flying rubber bands land, so choose a person with a keen eye and some running shoes!
??? ?Use caution to shoot the rubber bands out in front of you?and make sure no one is in the flight path! If necessary, have an adult do the rubber band launching.

Procedure
??? ?At the outside place you picked, stand where there is lots of clearance in front of you. With your chalk, draw a line in front of your toes. This is where you will line your feet up when you shoot your rubber bands. This is also the mark from where you will measure the distances your rubber bands have flown.
??? ?Your helper can stand a few meters in front of you, but off to the side, not directly in the line of fire! Make sure he or she has a piece of chalk.
??? ?Shoot a rubber band by hooking it on the front edge of the ruler, then stretching it back to 10 centimeters (cm) on the ruler and letting the rubber band go. Remember the angle and height at which you hold the ruler because you will need to keep it the same for each rubber band launch.
??? ?Have your helper draw a small chalk circle where the rubber band landed.
??? ?Shoot at least four more rubber bands in the same way, stretching them back to 10 cm on the ruler each time. Have your helper circle where each lands.
??? ?Measure the distances from your line to the circles your helper made. Write these distances down under the heading "10 cm." Did all five rubber bands land close to each other or was there a lot of variation in where they fell?
??? ?Shoot more rubber bands in the same way, except stretch them back to 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm or 30 cm. Shoot at least five rubber bands for each stretch length. After each launch, have your helper circle where they land. After launching five rubber bands at a given stretch length, measure the distances from your line to the circles. Write these distances under a heading for their stretch length (for example, "20 cm").
??? ?For each stretch length, did all five rubber bands land close to one another or was there a lot of variation? Did they land far from where the rubber bands landed that were launched using different stretch lengths?
??? ?Average your results for each stretch length and make a graph of your results by putting "Stretch Length (cm)" on the x-axis (this will be 10 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm and 30 cm) and "Launch Distance (cm)" on the y-axis (this will be the distances you measured). Do your data follow any type of pattern or trend? What was the relationship between the stretch length and the launch distance? What do you think this indicates about the relationship between potential and kinetic energy when using rubber bands?
??? ?Tip: If you run out of rubber bands, you can always grab some of the ones you already used and reuse them because there will be a chalk circle where they landed.
??? ?Extra: In this activity you kept the angle and height of the launch the same from trial to trial. How do these variables affect the distance the rubber band travels? Design a separate activity to test each of these variables separately.
??? ?Extra: You can do a very similar activity to this one by using other types of mechanical systems, such as springs and slingshots. How do the data collected using these other mechanical systems compare with that collected using rubber bands?
??? ?Extra: For an advanced challenge, you can use linear regression to further analyze your data. Can you define an equation that expresses the relationship between potential and kinetic energy in this system?
