FedEx employee charged for bomb joke on Army base (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? Prosecutors in Utah charged a FedEx driver with a threat of terrorism count over allegations he joked that a package he was delivering to a Utah Army base was likely a bomb.

Charges filed Wednesday in Salt Lake City show the deliveryman was dropping off a package on Sept. 20 addressed to an Army Corps of Engineers employee at Camp Williams.

Prosecutors say that when a woman asked him what it was, he replied that it was probably a bomb. Military police then evacuated 215 people from the building and the surrounding area.

The Deseret News identified the driver as 27-year-old Kevin Coleman.

Police say the man later told them his comment was a mistake.

He's charged with a third-degree felony count of threat of terrorism.

Israeli-Palestinian talks end with no progress: officials (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) -

Israeli-Palestinian talks aimed at reviving peace negotiations ended in Jordan Wednesday without achieving any progress and President Mahmoud Abbas plans to consult fellow Arabs on his next move, Palestinian officials said.

The options being considered by the Palestinians include pushing ahead with United Nations membership and reconciliation with the rival Islamist Hamas group -- moves opposed by Israel.

"The Israelis brought nothing new in these meetings," said one Palestinian official familiar with the talks. "We are now going to assess our options and will consult our brothers in the Arab League on February 4."

The talks came as part of a proposal by the Quartet of Middle East mediators - the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations - which set a three-month deadline last October for the two sides to make proposals on issues of territory and security.

The aim is to reach a peace deal by the end of this year.

The European Union foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, is on a regional visit to nudge Israelis and Palestinians to maintain the talks begun this month.

She has been seeking Israeli confidence-building measures for Palestinians, including freeing some prisoners and more freedom in areas of the West Bank held by Israel.

Israelis and Palestinians held five sessions of talks, in which the Israelis offered a document comprising 21 points that Abbas had dismissed as worthless.

Despite strong opposition from the United States and Israel, the Palestinian Authority applied to the U.N. Security Council last September for U.N. membership. But a committee to consider the application failed to reach consensus, and the Palestinians have not so far requested a formal vote in the council.

Peace talks foundered in late 2010 with Palestinians demanding that Israel suspend settlement building in the occupied West Bank, including Arab East Jerusalem.

Abbas also demanded that Israel agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state on all lands occupied in the 1967 Middle East war before resuming negotiations.

Israel has rejected both demands and said it was ready to resume negotiations immediately with no preconditions.

Obama pitches economic message in swing states

(AP) ? President Barack Obama embarks Wednesday on a three-day tour of politically crucial states in a post-State of the Union journey to sell his 2012 economic policy goals while pitching his presidency to a divided public.

Fresh from his address to a joint session of Congress, Obama will promote his agenda to attract more manufacturing to American soil by showcasing the bookends of American industry ? a conveyor belt maker in Iowa that evokes a resurgence of the United States' industrial prime and an Intel plant in Arizona that symbolizes the promise of high technology.

Obama will highlight energy security Thursday in Nevada and Colorado and wrap up Friday by pushing education and training proposals at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Presidential travel following the State of the Union is commonplace, allowing presidents to temporarily bask in the afterglow of their prime-time performances, milking their message before key constituencies.

Obama's trip comes amid signs of economic improvements even as battling Republican presidential contenders appeal to conservatives by sounding increasingly hostile to his policies.

Underlying the president's specific policy proposals will be the election-year economic fairness argument that he has been refining since he spelled it out in Osawatomie, Kan., last month, including higher taxes on the wealthy. Reinforcing the political subtext of the trip is the fact that four of the five states he will visit will hold Republican presidential caucuses or primaries within the next month. The two caucuses ? in Nevada and Colorado ? come within two weeks of his visit.

Obama has made a point of grabbing headlines in states in the midst of Republican presidential contests, eager not to cede the political message to his rivals.

What's more, of five paths that Obama campaign manager Jim Messina has charted to win re-election in November, all foresee winning Michigan, three require winning Iowa, two require Colorado and Nevada, and one has Arizona in the Obama win column. In 2008, of the five states he's visiting, Obama only lost Arizona, the home state of then rival John McCain.

Obama will also use his trip to grant two high-profile interviews, one to the Spanish-language television network Univision and the other to ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer. With Univision, the White House hopes to reach an important Latino voting bloc, a constituency that could be important in states such as Arizona and Nevada. The White House also likes the reach ABC gives the president because the interview will be spread among three news shows ? the evening news, "Nightline" and "Good Morning America."

As part of his focus on manufacturing on Wednesday, Obama's trip to Arizona marks his second visit to an Intel plant. He traveled to the firm's Oregon campus in 2011, when Intel announced it would spend $5 billion on a new computer chip manufacturing facility. Intel's CEO, Paul Otellini, is a member of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

Looking to increase domestic manufacturing, Obama on Tuesday reiterated his proposal to eliminate tax incentives that make it more attractive for companies to ship jobs overseas. The proposal would require American companies to pay a minimum tax on their overseas profits in order to prevent other countries from attracting U.S. businesses with unusually low tax rates.

Obama also wants to eliminate tax deductions companies receive for the cost of shutting down factories and moving production overseas. He wants to create a new tax credit to cover moving expenses for companies that close production overseas and bring jobs back to the U.S. He also wants to reduce tax rates for manufacturers and double the tax deduction for high-tech manufacturers in order to create more manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

Oldest-known astrologer's board discovered

A research team has discovered what may be the oldest astrologer's board, engraved with zodiac signs and used to determine a person's horoscope.

Dating back more than 2,000 years, the board was discovered in Croatia, in a cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The surviving portion of the board consists of 30 ivory fragments engraved with signs of the zodiac. Researchers spent years digging them up and putting them back together. Inscribed in a Greco-Roman style, they include images of Cancer, Gemini and Pisces.?

The board fragments were discovered next to a phallic-shaped stalagmite amid thousands of pieces of ancient Hellenistic (Greek style) drinking vessels.?

An ancient astrologer, trying to determine a person's horoscope, could have used the board to show the position of the planets, sun and moon at the time the person was born.

"What he would show the client would be where each planet is, where the sun is, where the moon is and what are the points on the zodiac that were rising and setting on the horizon at the moment of birth," said Alexander Jones, a professor at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University.

"This is probably older than any other known example," Jones said. "It's also older than any of the written-down horoscopes that we have from the Greco-Roman world," he said, adding, "we have a lot of horoscopes that are written down as a kind of document on papyrus or on a wall but none of them as old as this."

Jones and Staso Forenbaher, a researcher with the Institute for Anthropological Research in Zagreb, reported the discovery in the most recent edition of the Journal for the History of Astronomy.

A 'King Tut experience'
In 1999, the team was digging near the entrance of the Croatian cave, a site well known to archaeologists and people at the nearby hamlet of Nakovana who simply called it "Spila," which means "the cave," Forenbaher told LiveScience.

But what nobody knew at the time was that the cave had a section that had been sealed off more than 2,000 years ago. Forenbaher's girlfriend (now his wife) burrowed through the debris, discovering a wide low passageway that continued in the dark for nearly 33 feet (10 meters). Forenbaher described going through the passageway as "the unique King Tut experience, coming to a place where nobody has been for a couple of thousand years."

Stepping into the cavern "there was a very thin limestone crust on the surface that was cracking under your feet when you went in, which meant that nobody walked there in a very, very, long time," Forenbaher said.

The team would later determine that it had been sealed off in the first century B.C., possibly in response to a military campaign waged against the local people by the Romans.

When the archaeologists investigated they found the phallic-shaped stalagmite, numerous drinking vessels that had been deposited over hundreds of years, and something else. "In the course of that excavation these very tiny bits and pieces of ivory came up," said Forenbaher, "we didn?t even realize what we had at the time."

The team went to work. "What followed was years of putting them together, finding more bits and pieces, and figuring out what they were," Forenbaher said. In the end they found themselves staring at the remains of the oldest-known astrologer's board.

How did the board wind up in the cave?
Archaeologists are not certain how the board came to the cave or where it was originally made. Astrology originated in Babylon far back in antiquity, with the Babylonians developing their own form of horoscopes around 2,400 years ago.

Then around 2,100 years ago, astrology spread to the eastern Mediterranean, becoming popular in Egypt, which at the time was under the control of a dynasty of Greek kings.

"It gets modified very much into what we think of as the Greek style of astrology, which is essentially the modern style of astrology," Jones said. "The Greek style is the foundation of astrology that goes through the Middle Ages and into modern Europe, modern India (and) so on."

Radiocarbon dating shows that the ivory used to create the zodiac images dates back around 2,200 years ago, shortly before the appearance of this new form of astrology.

Researchers are not certain where the board was made although Egypt is a possibility. The ivory itself likely came from an elephant that was killed or otherwise died around that time, they suspect. Being a valuable item, the ivory would have been stored for several decades, or even a century, before it was used to construct the zodiac. These signs would then have been attached to a flat (possibly wooden) surface to create the board, which may have included other elements that didn't survive.

At some point it may have been put on a ship heading through the Adriatic Sea, an important route for commerce that the cave overlooks. The people who lived in Croatia at the time were called Illyrians. Although ancient writers tended to have a low opinion of them, archaeological evidence suggests that they interacted with nearby Greek colonies and were very much a part of the Mediterranean world.?

It's possible that an astrologer from one of the Greek colonies came to the cave to give a prediction. A consultation held in the flickering light of the cavern would have been a powerful experience, although perhaps not very convenient for the astrologer.

"It doesn't sound like a very practical place for doing the homework for the horoscope like calculating planetary positions," Jones said.

Another possibility is that the Illyrians traded for or stole the astrology board from someone, not fully understanding what it was used for. The board, along with the drinking vessels, would then have been placed as an offering to a deity worshipped in the cave whose identity is unknown.

"There is definitely a possibility that this astrologer's board showed up as an offering together with other special things that were either bought or plundered from a passing ship," Forenbaher said. He pointed out that the drinking vessels found in the cave were carefully chosen. They were foreign-made, and only a few examples of cruder amphora storage vessels were found with them.

"It almost seems that somebody was bringing out wine there, pouring it and then tossing the amphora away because they (the amphora) were not good enough for the gods, they were not good enough to be deposited in the sanctuary," Forenbaher said.

The phallic-shaped stalagmite, which may have grown on the spot naturally, appears to have been a center for these offerings and for rituals performed in the cavern. Forenbaher cautioned that all stalagmites look phallic to some degree and it's difficult to determine what meaning it had to the people in the cave. "It certainly meant something important," he said.

"This is a place where things that were valued locally, were deposited to some kind of supernatural power, to some transcendental entity or whatever (it was)."

Logan Lynn: Queer Celebrities Need Love, Too: An Interview with Matt Alber, Bruce LaBruce, Daniela Sea, Danny Roberts, Jackie Beat, Holcombe Waller, and Matthew Zink

In keeping with the theme of love, family, and relationship from my last post, I reached out to some famous friends to see what their thoughts were on the subject.

Singer/songwriter Matt Alber, filmmaker and photographer Bruce LaBruce, actor and musician Daniela Sea (from Showtime's The L Word), TV personality and activist Danny Roberts (from MTV's Real World: New Orleans), drag superstar and electrosleeze pioneer Jackie Beat, composer and singer Holcombe Waller, and "Charlie" Swimwear designer Matthew Zink all weighed in on the same five questions:

1. If you could sum up your concept of "relationships" in one word, what would it be?

2. What is your favorite love song of all time?

3. If you could choose any actor to play you in the movie version of your life, who would it be? What about them is you?

4. How has the relationship between your mother and father influenced your ideas about love and relationships?

5. What three qualities do you look for in a partner?

Here come their answers! (Drum roll please...)

Matt Alber

Matt is a singer/songwriter and all-around pop phenom. Dude's cover of Madonna's "Take a Bow" from his new record Constant Crows will make you cry. So will his "End of the World" video.

1. I guess it would be "listen." My first answer was "summer sausage," but then I realized that is two words.

2. Hands down, it's gotta be "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, 1) because we have the same birthday, and 2) because I got to sing it with a live band at the Playboy Mansion when I used to make my living as a singer in Los Angeles' top cover band.

3. Ryan Gosling is my first choice, but mostly because of those sweet, dreamy eyes. Of course, if Jake Gyllenhaal is free, please ask his agent if he would consider the role. You can tell them that the "losing his virginity" scene will be a hell of a lot more comfortable than Brokeback.

4. My parents spent the better part of their young adult lives at war with one another. I'm very close with both of them, and they'd agree with that statement. Their relationship was founded on a lot of hope, but also on a lot of control. I think true love means you speak up lovingly when your lover crosses a personal line, and that every conversation comes back to "I want this to work" more than "I want to be right."

5. His masculine playfulness, his handsome face I can't stop staring at, and his chili.

* * * * *

Bruce LaBruce

Over the years, Bruce has been called everything from pornographer to genre genius, but one thing is undeniable: he is authentically himself, and I love that. Watch the trailer for his latest film, L.A. Zombie.

1. "Love," "love," and "love."

2. "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates.

3. Lindsay Lohan, because she's ginger like me, a brat with criminal tendencies like me, and I think if she played it a bit more feminine than she usually does, she could nail me. Plus, she needs a good comeback role.

4. My parents will have been married 60 years in February, so I guess I've learned about stability and longevity from them.

5. Topness, unrehearsed masculinity, and gentleness.

* * * * *

Daniela Sea

Daniela is a filmmaker, musician, and actor, and is best known for her role as Moira/Max on Showtime's The L Word.

1. Unique in each incarnation: on Valentine's Day, "relationship with a lover" comes to mind, of course. But "relationship" is a great word for the interconnectivity of all things. My relationship to the Earth is precious to me, as well as to the animals, to my fellow humans, and to the elements that bring life to the planet. My relationship to my family and to the communities that hold me up gives me joy every day. Each spirit is unique and intertwined; being in relation to all beings in all the universes is a truth that sustains me. This is love.

2. There are some great ones, but I'll go back to my childhood roots, my mom spinning Joni Mitchell on the record player as I swung in the living room hammock: "A Case of You." She sings, "Part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time." I could be much more avant-garde or punk rock, but honestly, that would most likely take the prize.

3. Would I play me? If not myself, than perhaps Agnes Varda would make the film, and play me and herself? She's my hero.

4. I learned that love can be unconditional and everlasting, however it shifts shape.

5. For me, a good mix of curiosity about the world, kindness, wildness, and a free-spirited soul. A great mind and heart is right up there, as well.

* * * * *

Danny Roberts

Danny first appeared as himself on MTV's The Real World and has been an outspoken voice from the LGBT community for over a decade.

1. "Unity." A relationship is a mutually beneficial arrangement where two people uplift each other, encourage each other, and support each other in every way possible. There's no one way or best way of going about this.

2. "All Is Full of Love" by Bj?rk.

3. Jude Law: he plays an amazing brooding cynic.

4. Well, I certainly learned from them that it's give-and-take and that it's important to compromise and give a person room, but at some point you have to put your foot down and bring them back to center, and it's always a two-way road. I also learned that two people can work through a tremendous amount of adversity and continue to love each other.

5. Must be down-to-Earth and centered, must love to continue to explore and learn in life and have a natural sense of curiosity, and must have a sense of humor and never take this short life too seriously.

* * * * *

Jackie Beat

Jackie is a star of stage, screen, and sound. Her band Dirty Sanchez might as well have owned the rights to the electroclash movement a few years ago.

1. "Friends."

2. "How Beautiful You Are" by The Cure.

3. Miss Piggy, for all the obvious reasons.

4. Listen to the song mentioned in the second question and you tell me!

5. Kindness, a sense of humor, and a deep-seated lack of self-esteem.

* * * * *

Matthew Zink

Matthew makes the beautiful people more beautiful through swimwear. Check out his new collection.

1. "Partner."

2. "I Really Got the Feeling" by Dolly Parton.

3. That is a hard question! Maybe Ryan Gosling... I am such a fan of him as an actor. He's so talented and carries himself like a gentlemen. (Perhaps a bit too handsome to play me.)

4. My parents showed me that love is patient and you constantly have to work at it, but it's worth all the hard work.

5. Kindness, intimacy, and passion.

* * * * *

Holcombe Waller

Holcombe has the voice of an angel. Watch his "Hardliners" video.

1. My definition of an amorous relationship in one word would probably be "grace," both in terms of how it describes elegance and beauty, as well as the sense of mercy and clemency implied. All people should bring beauty and forgiveness into the world around them. In a relationship, this duty is amplified and focused between partners.

2. I have too many favorite love songs to really pick just one, but the first that came to mind is Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne," particularly because of the way it portrays a kind of ambivalent masculine love born in fascination with this mysterious otherly female dream character. It's so fabulous, it's honorifically gay.

3. Well, of course it would be Meryl Streep. I mean, what about Meryl isn't me? That's the question! I would only worry about what Nora Ephron once said about the travails of having been portrayed in film by Meryl Streep: she simply will play you better than you do, and this could be the cause of deep existential anguish for one's own ego. I should be careful what I wish for.

4. Through thick and thin, my parents are deeply committed to each other till death do they part. I've seen them go through things that seem to push the limits of the phrase "for better or for worse," and I think I've internalized that sense of commitment from them. It's not just applied towards romantic partnership; I feel this way about my closest friends. I don't want anything but death to get in the way.

5. Given that I'm partnered, let me share the three things I always tell my single friends that they should be looking for in their prospective dates and potential significant others. The first and most important quality in a person in a relationship is that they want to be in the relationship. This seems so basic, but I've had terrible problems with this in the past -- being with someone (or with people, if they are poly) who profess ambivalence about whether or not they want to be in a relationship -- and I've seen it a lot in my friends' romantic trials. My attitude is that if someone is indicating ambivalence, end it. You can't work through problems if there isn't a reason to, and relationship ambivalence is a deal breaker. It's one thing for another person not to know if they should or shouldn't be in a relationship, but to know that you are ambivalent means the relationship is not good for now. The second quality I recommend is ease. People always say "relationships take work," but they get confused and think that the relationship itself is the problem you have to work to surmount. What's that about? The relationship should be the easy joyful wonderful thing that gets pummeled by the real and unavoidable troubles of being alive. Sure, these can make a relationship hard, if someone is going through a rough patch, but if a relationship is like hard sailing on a smooth and beautiful ocean, ditch it and look for a boat that's easier to be on. Lastly, I highly recommend finding a partner you're in love with who is also in love with you. I actually think this is more rare than people think, but steps 1 and 2 are a good start.

Paris Hilton Tackling 'Whole New Genre' On Next Album

Hilton is working with Afrojack and childhood friends LMFAO for her sophomore record.

Paris Hilton famously declared that "Stars are Blind" on her 2006 single. Now, she's hoping to recapture some of that musical magic on the follow-up to her self-titled debut.

She's hooking up with club-music producer extraordinaire Afrojack for the record and is knee-deep in getting it done. "I've been in the studio all day recording my new album," she told MTV News at the Weinstein Golden Globes afterparty. And if fans think she'll be channeling some sugary sweet pop on this next release, they'd better think again.

"It's completely different from my last album. I'm going with a whole new genre. I have Afrojack executive-producing the entire album. So we've just been coming up with the most incredible tracks," she teased. "I was just in the studio with RedFoo the other night, so we're going to be doing my new single with LMFAO."

Given how ubiquitous LMFAO is these days, a Paris/LMFAO track could be the perfect combination to reintroduce the world to Paris Hilton, pop star. "I'm so excited. The music's turning out so great and I can't wait to release it this summer. Two nights ago [I recorded the song with LMFAO]," she said, describing the session as "awesome." "I've known them since I was a little girl. We grew up together 'cause our parents are friends, so I'm just so proud of them and all their success and what they've done 'cause they've just created this whole 'Party Rock' brand and it's just so awesome."

Noting that she grew up singing in the choir and can also play violin, piano and guitar, Paris defends her choice to record another album. "I think a lot of people don't know that music is my passion since I was a little girl," she said. "I'm very musically talented. This is more my thing [musically on this album], more of a club scene, more dance. ... The single's done; it's in the can. That's probably going to be out [within] the next month or two."

Hilton isn't just singing for her new record — she'll also be trying her hand at singing on the big screen when she works with "Repo! The Genetic Opera" director Darren Bousman on his next project. "I'm about to do a film with my friend Darren Bousman. He has a new musical that's coming up called 'The Devil's Carnival,' " she said. "It's about Hell, it's a musical and it's different."
