[Product Review] Sony VAIO E15: Stylish, Competent, State of the Mainstream Art
Full Review
The Sony VAIO E15 is as stylish a mainstream laptop as you're likely to find. Starting at only $500 with a 15.5-inch screen and state-of-the-art ports and connectivity, it's an inexpensive way to impress your fellow humans with your astute judgment of things computing, as well as your fine taste in design.
Though inexpensive in its least formidable configuration--which sports an Intel Pentium B970 CPU--the VAIO E15 may be configured with faster stuff up to about $1350 (Core i7). Our "nicely configured" $700 test unit has a Core i5-3210M CPU, 6GB of system memory, a CD/DVD burner, and a 5400-rpm, 750GB hard drive. Options include a Blu-ray player, but sadly, no 7200-rpm hard drives or SSDs.
It is most likely the slowish hard drive that held the E15 in check during our testing and hands-on. As the chart below suggests, a WorldBench 7 score of 87 is a little below average even for an affordable laptop, and its subjective feel (the speed of menus and windows opening, icons being drawn, and so on) is slightly sluggish until Windows has cached icons and the like. On the other hand, 1080p video plays very smoothly, and sound through the speakers is more sonorous than with most laptops, which is to say, it's not grating. The 1.3-megapixel webcam gives a nice image as well.
Gaming frame rates delivered by the integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics are generally playable up to the 15.5-inch display's maximum 1366 by 768 resolution, but only in low detail; tougher games will require you to knock said resolution down a notch or two. The AMD Radeon HD 7550M discrete GPU that's available for either $100 (1GB of dedicated memory) or $150 (2GB of memory) will improve frame rates tremendously.
At 14.65 inches wide, 1.3 inches high, and 10 inches deep the VAIO E15 is a midsize laptop in every respect. It travels at 6.3 pounds (that includes the 0.9-pound AC adapter), and run time is an acceptable 4 hours, 14 minutes with the standard 4000mAh battery. You can increase that considerably (along with the weight) with the 5300mAh ($20) or 7950mAh ($100) batteries.
Ports on the VAIO E15 are a modern mix and include a single always-on USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports, and VGA and HDMI outputs, as well as a Kensington lock port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a gigabit ethernet port. Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi round out the connectivity, and the front has SD and Memory Stick ProDuo card slots.
The backlit, Chiclet-style keyboard recessed into the upper deck of the VAIO E15 is large, covering nearly the entire width of the laptop. The spacing and layout are top-notch, including the 10-key numeric keypad, though Sony has yet to emulate the magical "feel" of a Lenovo laptop. It's easy to set up a typing rhythm on the E15's keyboard, but the short key travel is apparent, and you'll never feel quite as secure on it as with a Lenovo.
The one-piece rocker touchpad is responsive, perhaps too much so. I had a difficult time avoiding accidental taps and had to turn the feature off. Less clumsy individuals will probably be fine. Design flourishes include an Assist button that turns on the laptop and initiates the software recovery software, a Web button that does the same but with Windows and your favorite browser, and the Vaio button that launches the application of your choice.
Sony loves to load software onto its laptops. Some of it is useful, powerful, and/or necessary such as the Arcsoft Webcam Suite, Cyberlink PowerDVD, and Sony's own ACID, Sound Forge Audio Studio, and Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. A lot of it such as the VAIO Gate launch application, VAIO Messenger, and VAIO Smart Network look nice but are really there to remind you which company's laptop you bought. Ditch the applets that duplicate functionality already present in the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system (Windows 7 Pro is an option), and it's remarkable how much quicker the E15 responds.
Sony's laptops are always more than the sum of their parts--a sense of style will do that for you. The VAIO E15 is no exception and will undoubtedly turn a lot of heads in the major electronics outlets. It's a great unit overall. Still, it would be even better if Sony offered a faster hard drive option.

American Cancer Society looking for study participants
The American Cancer Society is turning to Kentuckiana for a new study to help fight the disease.
The group announced a sign-up for a study called Cancer Prevention Study-3 on Tuesday. It is a nationwide study which will look at things like lifestyle and genetic factors that could cause cancer.
They hope to sign up about 1,500 people from different backgrounds in the area.
Sign ups for the study begin in August.

Notre Dame Football: Breaking Down the Irish's Chances of Landing Alex Anzalone
Despite an impressive haul of 15 commitments to this point, Notre Dame is still searching for more in its 2013 class ? not just in quantity, but in quality. With a small 2012 class, multiple defections and some possible medical hardships, this year?s class is expected to be somewhere around 22 or 23 by the time National Signing Day rolls around in February.
While eight of Notre Dame?s commitments are rated as at least 4-star prospects by Rivals.com, the Irish need that number to reach double digits in order to complete the type of class they need to compete at the highest level. Perhaps their top remaining target at this point is linebacker Alex Anzalone from Wyomissing, Pa.
One of the best players in the Keystone State, Anzalone could play either inside or outside. Due to the?recent commitment of 5-star linebacker Jaylon Smith, an ideal outside linebacker, the Irish like Anzalone primarily at inside linebacker, a position of need. Manti Te?o departs after the season, and Dan Fox and Carlo Calabrese are seniors in the classroom with fifth-year options for 10`2.
An exceptional student, Anzalone is a great fit both on and off of the field for Notre Dame. Geometry even has a place on the gridiron, in the form of angles of pursuit. Anzalone excels at closing gaps on running backs with great vision and field awareness. At 6?3?, he has a bigger frame than Te?o, and could turn into the next great Irish run-stuffer.
Anzalone was initially committed to Ohio State, but reversed course in early May following a report that a registered sex offender was using social media to contact potential Buckeyes recruits. A photo was leaked of Anzalone and current Notre Dame commit Mike Heuerman with the man at the team?s spring game in April.
?
He initially did not rule out a re-commitment to Ohio State, but they appeared to have fallen out of favor. The three?contenders for Anzalone are Florida, Notre Dame and Penn State. Although he was planning to visit Penn State on Thursday, the Nittany Lions appear to be trailing slightly behind the Gators and Irish.
Anzalone?s father, Sal, is a Florida alumnus, and his grandparents currently reside in Florida. However, Anzalone was?in?South Bend?two weeks ago with a number of current Irish commits including Heuerman, Smith, Malik Zaire and Rashad Kinlaw. The rapport he?s developed with the current group of commits (search #IrishMob13 on Twitter for evidence of the group?s camaraderie) bodes well for Notre Dame?s chances.
His visit to State College will likely be his final one before making a decision. A decision prior to the start of the season is expected, and could come as early as the next couple of?weeks. After he de-committed from Ohio State, Florida appeared to be the favorite because of the family connections. Reading the tea leaves, I?d be surprised if he doesn?t end up at Notre Dame.
Due to geography, academics and its on-field struggles, Notre Dame can?t be a major player with every top recruit. When someone with Anzalone?s makeup seriously considers Notre Dame, it becomes almost a must-get for Brian Kelly. With Smith, there was a happy ending for the Irish. While it?s far from a certainty at this point, expect a similar outcome with Anzalone.

Georgia Tech's Shimi robot wants to rock with you all night, rock the night away
Shimi certainly has the makings of a viral video hit, but its creators at Georgia Tech want you to know that there's more to the dancing robot than just a pretty face. The "interactive musical buddy," designed by the school's Center for Music Technology, is a one-foot-tall smartphone-enabled "docking station with a brain." Shimi has a whole slew of functionality, using the phone's face-detection to track listeners and better position its speakers. Users can also clap out a beat, which the 'bot will use to pull a matching song from the phone's playlist, playing the track and, naturally, dancing to the beat. Forthcoming functionality includes the ability for users to shake their heads or wave a hand to affect Shimi's song choices. Google I/O attendees will get the opportunity for a closer look at Shimi this week in San Francisco. In the meantime, check out a couple of videos of the robot doing its thing after the break.

Three Families Unite to Raise $30-Million for Aid to Veterans - The ...
Three affluent families are forming a fund with the purpose of raising $30-million to support programs that serve military veterans, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America announced today.
The families have donated more than $1-million and plan to seek contributions especially from other wealthy people, including those without personal connections to any service members.
Philip Green, president of PDG Consulting, a health-care consultancy,? and his wife, Elizabeth Cobbs, chief of geriatrics at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C., joined with their friends Glenn and Laurie Garland and with the Jim Stimmel family to create the fund, Mr. Green said in an interview with The Chronicle.
The money raised for the new Veterans Support Fund will be funneled to five nonprofits that help returning service members and their families.
In addition to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which will operate the fund and conduct fundraising for it, the other beneficiaries include the National Military Family Association, Operation Homefront, Operation Mend, and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.
Mr. Green and Ms. Cobb have donated $600,000 to start the fund, and the Garland and Stimmel families have each contributed $250,000.
Michelle McCarthy, a spokeswoman for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said the fund will focus fundraising appeals on people who can give at least $250,000, but will accept donations of any size.
The announcement of the fund comes at a crucial time. A recent Chronicle article reported that many charities that serve veterans are desperate for money.
The impetus for the Veterans Support Fund came from Mr. Green and his wife, who said they realized how fortunate they were that their three grown children were not involved in the wars and came to believe that soldiers and their families are owed a special debt.
?The message we?re trying to communicate to these families is this is a moral obligation rather than a decision to give a charitable donation,? Mr. Green said. ?This is different because you really have a moral obligation to give, you actually owe [military families] money.?

Wildfires leave Colorado tourism high and dry
On Monday FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to fight the fires in Colorado that are burning across the state. The most recent fire, in Colorado Springs, resulted in 11,000 evacuations over the weekend. Miguel Almaguer reports.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- ?After two weeks of around-the-clock work, firefighters are starting to gain the upper hand on the High Park fire near Fort Collins, Colo. But even as some of the residents are allowed to return to their homes, there is another casualty from the 100-square-mile blaze: Northern Colorado?s annual influx of summer visitors seeking clean air and whitewater rivers.
Jim Clark, executive director of the Ft. Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau, can see a smoky haze over the Roosevelt National Forest from his location downtown.
?The bad news is...we?re known for our outdoor recreation," he said. "A lot of that at the present time is closed.?
Clark?s office is handling many out-of-state calls from people who have questions about the smoke from the fire.? For the past several?weeks?the Colorado Department of Public Health has issued air quality health alerts because of the dense smoke along a 200-mile corridor from Colorado Springs in the south up to the Wyoming border. This week, the smoke has been less of an issue.
?We have lots of things for them in town -- breweries, shops ... everything is still open," Clark said. "But, there are some folks who would have visited us that probably will stay away.?
Over the weekend, new flames near Colorado Springs forced thousands to evacuate -- one of several fires emptying campgrounds and hotels across the parched state.?
Preston Harrington and Darrel Sellers,?of?Lake Charles, La., had planned to climb nearby Pikes Peak. Then they got evacuated from their hotel.?
"We're used to the hurricanes and evacuating and what not. And we come up here and expect good weather and since we've been here they've had hailstorms, and now forest fires -- it just reminds us of being back home," Harrington said.?
Bill Fee, shopkeeper at the Nature of Things Chainsaw Art in Manitou Springs, Colo., said it's devastating for local businesses, especially the weekend before the Fourth of July when they tend to have the most customers.?
"I do worry for Colorado this year for tourism through the whole entire state -- not just the small town of Manitou, which relies completely on tourism -- it affects [businesses] across the board."
Clark says it will be weeks or even months before any hard numbers are available to calculate the loss of visitors due to the fire.
Rafting companies offer refunds
The losses have already started for Pat Legel, owner of Wanderlust Adventure Rafting in Bellevue, Colo. Legel has spent what should have been a busy start to the rafting season dusting off his rafts and life jackets. ?This is historical. This is the longest we?ve been out of business.?
Legel?s company offers trips down the Cache la Poudre River, one of the most popular whitewater rivers in Colorado. The fire has cut off access to the river where it runs through the burn zone. Wanderlust is one of six local outfitters which have suspended rafting on the Poudre since June 9.
Legel said his heart goes out to the more than 200 residents who have lost their homes to the fire.? But, for his business, the hardest part is making the daily calls to customers to let them know the river canyon is closed and to arrange refunds on their rafting fees.
?It?ll be a survival season, if we can get back some time early July. If not, we?ll have to maybe lay some people off and get a loan to carry us through next year.?
Legel started the company in 1982. He?s now 65.
"I don?t think I will see the landscape along the river recover in my lifetime,? he said.?
Tourists changing plans
Jane Servi had house guests for the weekend at her Larimer County home and had to?scramble to make new plans for weekend activities. ?She was looking forward to showing the visitors from Boston a Colorado whitewater adventure. But her Poudre River rafting trip was one of hundreds cancelled by the fire. Eventually she found an alternative rafting location nearly 70 miles away.?It was disappointing, she said, but she's more concerned "about the people who are up there whose houses have been destroyed, and people who have been displaced."
Last week "NBC Nightly News" found Grant Houx, owner of St. Peter?s Fly shop in Fort Collins, standing thigh-deep in the Poudre River about 10 miles downstream from the fire. He was whipping a seven-foot-long fly rod through air that tastes like smoke. The water runs clear and cool here, for now. But when late summer rains come, the soot, ash and charred underbrush from 70,000 scorched acres will wash down the Poudre and smaller streams like a black tide.? Not good for trout and other native fish.
?'Concern? is one word. We don?t know exactly what the effects of that soot will be,? he said.?
Houx?s fishing guide service has had ?a few? fire-related cancellations. He explains that fishing is still good on several other rivers in the area unaffected by the fire.
Fires of 2012 follow record year for Colorado tourism?
According to the Colorado Tourism Office, 59.7 million visitors came to the state in 2011. They spent $10.7 billion. Larimer County, where the High Park Fire continues to burn, represents 2.7 percent of statewide visitor spending.
Colorado Tourism Office chief Al White says statewide reservations are up ?double-digits over last summer? but acknowledges the impact of the fires in northern Colorado and Fort Collins. The hope is that tourists understand that even a 100 square mile fire represents less than one tenth of one percent of the state of Colorado.
?The High Park fire is a tragedy, but there is still a lot to see and do in Colorado," White said. "And for now, people are still making plans to come here.?

Nobody puts the British One Direction in a corner! The boy band's boss, Simon Cowell, is countersuing the American band that filed a suit against the chart-topping Brits back in April.
According to E! News, Cowell is firing back at the U.S. band who sued his band, alleging that they have "continuously and consistently been utilizing the ONE DIRECTION Mark since ODUK made its public debut on the popular British television program 'The X Factor' in the fall of 2010." The U.S. 1D cites that they formed and named themselves One Direction back in 2009, 12 months before the boy band made their debut on the singing competition show. Cowell filed his countersuit on Thursday.
The American band adds they had already filed a trademark for the name when the U.K. band began making the rounds. They have sued Cowell and his label, SyCo, for $1 million in damages. Cowell's team fired back: "[U.S. One Direction] is guilty of fraud, oppression or malice, and by reason thereof, [U.K. One Direction] are, in addition to their actual damages, entitled to recover punitive damages." Their suit furthers that the U.K. 1D has found "unprecedented success and fame in the United States" and "became the first U.K. musical act to have a debut album enter the U.S. Billboard chart at No.1."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cowell and his team claim that the U.S. band knew about his band when they formed, noting that they should check their timeline again. "For example, reference was made to ODUK on Nov. 28, 2010, in postings on the 'OneDirectionUSA' Facebook page (established by Third Party Defendants after the creation of ODUK's own, highly popular Facebook page)," Cowell's suit notes.
The U.S. band's attorney, Peter Ross, spoke to THR, adding, "It looks like we got defendants' attention. This is the response we expected, given who we're up against. An effort is being made to intimidate these young men from California. Our clients believe in their case and will not be deterred."
Shortly after the first suit was filed against ODUK, fans began to weigh in with name suggestions for the floppy-haired fivesome. Such cheeky names as FU1 Direction and 5 UK White Boys made the final cut, per fans.

But then, suddenly, everything changed. Walk around the capital now and it?s hard not be impressed ? as well as entertained. This is one of the many reasons why this week sees the launch of the first ever London men?s fashion week: for three days from tomorrow, the capital will host a packed schedule of fashion shows, exhibitions, events and parties showcasing the best menswear talent the country has to offer to a multitude of buyers and press from across the globe. Prince Charles is kicking it all off with a party at St James?s Palace, Tom Ford is hosting a dinner in Mayfair, both Esquire and GQ magazines are throwing celeb-packed parties over the weekend, and there are dozens of fashion shows parading the talent of the country?s most innovative young designers and most esteemed Savile Row tailors.
Menswear is big business and, as an industry, is growing at an unfathomably fast rate despite a turbulent economy. Last year, according to figures from the NPD Group, men?s clothing sales were up four per cent on 2010 to $55.71?billion (?36?billion). Not a number to be sniffed at; and tailored clothing, in particular, saw sales rise 26 per cent in the 12 months ending this February. So how come, when many of the world?s economies are in tatters, men are spending more and looking better? Ironically, it is, I believe, the economic meltdown in 2008 that first led to us all pulling our sartorial socks up.
First, when jobs are short and unemployment queues long, we all try harder to look fit for purpose. It makes sense to invest some time and money in looking younger, fitter and smarter: and a good piece of clothing, especially a suit, ticks all the boxes. A well-chosen item of tailoring hides bumps and lumps, straightens backs and adds confidence: it?s the perfect battledress (look at the way the double-breasted suit has come back into fashion).
Secondly, after witnessing the turmoil that an industry that chose to break the rules, ignore convention and put greed over good sense caused us back in 2008, many of us looked to the past not only for comfort but for guidance. Rules and convention suddenly seemed attractive once more ? of course, the rules could be given a twist, updated even, but not totally ignored. And this approach affected how we looked at everything from banking practices to the way we dressed. A whole new generation suddenly paid attention, and found inspiration in how their fathers or grandparents dressed: we saw the return of bow ties, waistcoats, tweed jackets, flannel trousers, traditional brogues and even velvet slippers (one of the hottest shoe trends this coming autumn). Twentysomethings in Dalston kicked off the trend by bringing back these classic items and mixing them up with skinny jeans, hats and even moustaches, and soon this trend spread across the country and even overseas. Head to a fashion show venue in any major city today and you?re far more likely to be surrounded by a sea of men in tie pins and pocket squares than dropcrotch pants and hi-tops.
Another reason for a nation of better-dressed men is the internet. The web has allowed men to research, discover, learn and evaluate dress codes and trends from all over the world. At the touch of a button you can look at a street style blog and see what men in Paris, Sydney or San Francisco are wearing that week, you can Google ?seersucker? and instantly find out what it means and how best to wear it, you can visit thousands of fashion websites, blogs and forums and seek the answer to the most obscure sartorial conundrums, you can check out what today?s celebrities wore on last night?s red carpet and discover that a blue tux is currently more fashionable than a black one. You can ask anything you want and, the best thing about it is, no one need know. Men fear getting something wrong and being ridiculed, and now, thanks to the internet, that need never happen. You can learn everything you need to know, in an instant, anonymously. And with online fashion stores you can then buy something you like, having studied it at leisure from your armchair, and try it on in the comfort of your own home without the pressure of a sales assistant standing outside the changing room asking you whether you like it or not. Shopping for men has become less a task and more a pleasure.
These are the reasons why as the world?s tastemakers land on our shores for the first ever London Collections: Men tomorrow they won?t need to flinch behind their Cutler and Gross sunglasses. Gone are the shiny slacks, the ill-fitting suits and the pointy shoes. We?ve become once more, after a rocky decade or two, a nation of snappy dressers; one that is influencing the way men dress all over the world.
