Charlize Theron stalks into theaters this week with her take on the infamous Grimm despot. Unlike Julia Roberts' fruity portrayal from earlier this year, this queen is altogether more menacing and can shape-shift into a flock of ravens. A bit like Madonna.

Relatively few black, white families moving into multi-ethnic neighborhoods

WASHINGTON, DC, May 29, 2012 Despite increasing numbers of multiethnic neighborhoods in the United States, relatively few black or white families are actually moving into these types of communities, according to a new study in the June issue of the American Sociological Review.

"We pay a lot of attention to this proliferation of multiethnic neighborhoods, but they are still only a small part of the overall inter-neighborhood mobility picture for blacks and whites," said Kyle Crowder, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington and lead author of the study. "Blacks tend to originate in neighborhoods with very high concentrations of blacks and, when they move, they tend to move to other places that have very high concentrations of blacks. Their typical destination is not a multiethnic neighborhood. The same is even more true for whites."

Titled, "Neighborhood Diversity, Metropolitan Constraints, and Household Migration," the study considers mobility patterns of 44,808 black families and 57,415 white families, some of whom moved several times between 1977 and 2005, the period covered by the analysis. The study, which looks at moves families made from one neighborhood in a metropolitan area to another neighborhood in the same metropolitan area, relies on multiple sources of data, including the Panel Study of Income Dynamicsa nationally representative, longitudinal survey of U.S. residentsand the 1980, 1990, and 2000 U.S. Censuses.

According to the study, of the 9,940 moves that black families made between 1977 and 2005, 43.7 percent (4,340) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 5 percent (494) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 17.7 percent (1,763) were to multiethnic neighborhoods (whose populations were at least 10 percent black, at least 10 percent Hispanic or Asian, and at least 40 percent white), and 33.6 percent (3,343) were to other types of neighborhoods detailed in the analysis. By comparison, of the 8,823 moves that white families made during the same time period, 56.8 percent (5,008) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 2 percent (179) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 5.6 percent (493) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and 35.6 percent (3,143) were to other types of neighborhoods.

"Our study tells a somewhat pessimistic story, but it's also a realistic story," said Crowder, who coauthored the analysis with Jeremy Pais, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut, and Scott J. South, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Albany, SUNY. "It's a story that counters this idea that we should stop paying attention to residential segregation. The truth is, when it comes to eliminating residential segregation, we still have a long way to go. This becomes particularly clear when we look at the high percentage of black families from predominately black neighborhoods and the even higher percentage of white families from predominately white neighborhoods who wind up in homogeneous communities when they move."

The study found that of the 3,684 moves that black families made from predominately black neighborhoods between 1977 and 2005, 60.9 percent (2,245) were to other predominately black neighborhoods, 2 percent (74) were to predominately white neighborhoods, 18.9 percent (696) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and 18.2 percent (669) were to other types of neighborhoods. By comparison, of the 4,987 moves that white families made from predominately white neighborhoods during the same time period, 74.9 percent (3,734) were to other predominately white neighborhoods, 1.5 percent (73) were to predominately black neighborhoods, 2.4 percent (120) were to multiethnic neighborhoods, and just over 21 percent (1,060) were to other types of neighborhoods.

Crowder said it is important to note thatafter controlling for other factorsthe year in which black and white families moved had little or no impact on the kinds of neighborhoods to which they moved. "For black families, year of move is statistically non-significant and for white families it has a minimal impact," Crowder said. "So, by itself, year doesn't seem to be a very important indicator of where blacks and whites movedand there wasn't much change in where blacks and whites moved over time, once we account for other factors that affect destinations."

Interestingly, the study also found that the tendency for white and black families to move between neighborhoods dominated by their own racial group varies significantly across metropolitan areas. "The mobility of black and white families into more integrated neighborhoods is shaped substantially by demographic, economic, political, and spatial features of the broader metropolitan area," Crowder said.

According to the study, metropolitan area characteristics likely to limit residential integration for blacks and whites include: high levels of existing residential segregation and poverty as well as a significant percentage of the population living in the suburbs. "Lower levels of these characteristics promote integration," Crowder said. "Additionally, mobility into more diverse neighborhoods is more common in metropolitan areas with large supplies of new housing and relatively large concentrations of racial and ethnic minorities."

In terms of policy implications, Crowder said the study highlights the need for policymakers to continue working on ways to address residential segregation. "Residential segregation influences such things as the concentration and the propagation of crime as well as racial disparities in health and in exposure to pollution," Crowder said. "When people say, 'Segregation is going away' and 'We don't need to worry about it anymore,' those are messages that people will latch onto quickly. Unfortunately, those types of statements are just untrue."

Disney cruise ship picks up four adrift off coast

By Adam Coulter, Senior editor, Cruise Critic

May 28, 11.15 a.m. ET -- A Disney cruise ship picked up four men found adrift on a small raft near Key West, Florida.

Disney Fantasy boarded the men -? who are believed to be Cuban refugees -- while sailing from Florida to Grand Cayman on Sunday, May 27.

The men, who were spotted signalling for help, were brought aboard the ship and provided with medical attention, food and water, according to a statement from Disney.

What will happen to the men once they arrive on Grand Cayman remains unclear. In an e-mail to Cruise Critic, a spokesperson from Disney said, "We have notified the U.S. Coast Guard of this rescue and we are working with the proper authorities to coordinate the debarkation of the group ... It would be up to those authorities to determine next steps."

The incident follows a rescue by Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas which picked up 23 Cuban refugees off Cozumel, Mexico, in April.

In March, Star Princess allegedly failed to rescue three stranded fisherman adrift in the Pacific ?- despite passengers voicing their concerns. Two of the three men on the stricken fishing boat died of dehydration; the third, Adrian Vasquez, has since filed suit in a Florida court alleging negligence on the part of Princess Cruises.

Disney Fantasy set sail on a seven-day, round-trip cruise from Port Canaveral on Saturday. The ship is due into Georgetown, Grand Cayman Monday, May 28, where the four men are expected to disembark.

The science of why you love coffee ? Living ? Bangor Daily News ...

A generation ago, most Americans recognized two kinds of coffee: regular and decaf. Now we?re concerned about every last detail ? from the beans? country of origin and whether they are organic, have been shade-grown and traded fairly to the degree of roasting and how much pressure was applied during brewing. Yet for all of this connoisseurism, how much do we understand about the science of coffee?

Get ready to know your joe.

?Coffee?s main attributes are bitterness, acidity and body, also known as mouth-feel,? according to Ronald Pegg, a food science professor at the University of Georgia who teaches an introductory course on coffee. ?The key is to get these three attributes in balance.?

As coffee makes its way from tree to mug, producers must keep this balance in mind. It?s not an easy task, because coffee contains more than 1,000 chemical compounds, according to research by Thomas Hofmann of the Technical University of Munich and Oliver Frank of the University of Muenster.

Consider the first element, the bean. There are 70 species of coffee, but two dominate the market: coffea arabica, the more common variety native to Ethiopia, and coffea canephora, also known as coffea robusta, a more disease-resistant plant. Arabica is almost universally acknowledged as the superior variety, although blends often contain robusta because it?s cheaper and adds a strong bitterness that some coffee drinkers enjoy in small doses.

There are several chemical differences between the two varieties. Arabica has 60 percent more fat than robusta ? and taste-testers typically favor coffee made from beans with more fat. Fat also helps during the production process because it creates a more even roast. Arabica beans also have a higher concentration of sugar.

To understand why a sugary bean makes a better brew, we have to consider roasting.

Freshly picked coffee beans have virtually no flavor. Roasting is what makes coffee palatable. The roasting process triggers a long list of chemical reactions. One is caramelization, the breaking-down of sugar, which contributes to coffee?s brown color. Roasting also creates compounds that contribute to coffee?s unique flavor and aroma, including diacetyl, which adds a butterscotch flavor, and furans, which contribute a nutlike taste.

Roasting also generates what are known as Maillard reactions. Named after the French chemist Louis Camille Maillard, these complex reactions occur when heat is applied to amino acids in the presence of sugars. Like caramelization, they are responsible for browning and for the production of hundreds of chemicals that, in combination, give unique flavors to cooked meats, baked breads, dark beers, toast and coffee. Since arabica beans have about twice as much sugar as the robusta variety, the roasting process generates a fuller and more complex variety of Maillard reactions in them than it does in robusta, making for a more interesting taste in the coffee.

Roasting is a touchy business, though. High heat can also overproduce bitter compounds and ruin the drink. For many years, food scientists believed that caffeine was the main source of bitterness in coffee. While it?s true that pure caffeine has a bitter flavor, it?s present in such low proportions in an average cup of coffee that it contributes only a small amount of flavor.

In fact, coffee bitterness is attributable to a family of chemicals known as chlorogenic acids, which are also present in tea, peaches and prunes. Chlorogenic acids aren?t bitter themselves, but, when roasted, they transform into two related chemicals ? lactones and phenylindanes. Lactones give a pleasant, soft bitterness. Phenylindanes are more powerful and harsh, and are present in higher concentration in dark roasts.

Getting the roast right is still more art than science. Expert coffee roasters must constantly pull sample beans out from the heat to check the color and aroma. These markers are actually proxies for the concentration of lactones and phenylindanes. Food scientists are working on ways to make the process more scientific. One day, perhaps, instead of asking your barista for medium roast or dark roast, you?ll ask for a precise balance of lactones and phenylindanes. (And you thought coffee orders couldn?t get any more complicated.)

Just as there is science to bean selection and roasting, there?s also a little bit of science in brewing and drinking coffee.

How much of the coffee ends up in the cup depends on the brewing method chosen. Percolators and drip machines are extremely inefficient at transferring chemicals from bean to beverage. The final result is only about 1.3 percent coffee; the rest is water. That?s okay if you like a coffee with mild flavor and body, but many find that extraction rate rather weak. French-press (or plunger pot) coffee is similarly mild, but it is high in oil content, providing a body that some drinkers prefer. (French-press enthusiasts should be advised that those oils may elevate cholesterol levels.) On the other end of the spectrum are espresso machines, which force the coffee compounds into the water. Espresso is more than 5 percent coffee bean. These differences affect not only flavor but also the perception of body and mouth-feel.

No matter which brewing method you select, drink your joe immediately. As hot coffee sits, those lactones break down into acids. The pH of brewed coffee can drop 15 percent in an hour or so, throwing off the acidity-bitterness-body balance so crucial to a good cup of coffee.

Timeshares: A Monetary Investment or an Investment in Your ...

The number one complaint we receive on ReviewResorts.com is regarding time-share purchases. However, we recently received a review about the Krystal Cancun from Monika who lives in Houston, Texas who brought up a very interesting concept?buying a time-share because you want to use it and return to that resort on a yearly visit. Wow! What a concept.

It seems that many people purchase time-share programs as a monetary investment or because they think they are going re-sell half of the time and then stay in the other half of the time for free. Greed is good, right? However, if it was that easy, don?t you think the hotel would just sell the rooms themselves?

Time-shares may make sense if you feel so comfortable at a resort that you want to return year after year. If not, then in no way should you consider their time-share program even if the sales people entice you with a freebie or two. Your vacation time is precious don?t waste it putting yourself in a position to be pressured to buy something you don?t want. However, if you love the resort then maybe it may make sense. ?Your call.

Enjoy the Journey,
George

Our First Music Video ? I?m Debt Free and I Know It

Recently there was a music video that took the parody world by storm ? ?I?m Sexy and I Know It.? This is the type of song I would never sing?unless I was being silly and dancing around the house like a freak of nature.? Not that I would ever do such a thing. *Cough* The song is really rather vulgar. And I would NOT recommend watching the video?unless you think Speedos are sexy. Pardon me while I go gag.

Anyway, there was a SMART girl who decided to make a video called ?I?m Pregnant and I Know It.??If you haven?t seen this video yet, go watch it. It?s pretty funny. ?On You Tube you can be ?ANYTHING and You Know It.?

My friend Tia, from Sweet T Photography, suggested that Barry and I make a video with the same song and call it, ?I?m Debt Free and I Know It.?

As you might guess, this tickled me to pieces. We had SUCH FUN making this music video?and let me tell you, I got some WEIRD looks at the gas station ? and a few times I was worried about getting mugged for my $20.

Barry is the voice you hear in the video ? he sang it?and he?s pretty good if I say so myself. He put everything together and I wrote the lyrics.? So, enjoy.? :-D

We?re debt free?.and we KNOW IT.

?

*Those of you on mobile devices will need to find a computer to watch. ?Because we used an official karaoke soundtrack, YouTube placed some restrictions on viewing the video on mobile phones or televisions. :(

Chemists Make Olympic Rings On a Molecular Scale

I don't see how it's relevant, since the Olympic Committee isn't a profit making corporation, but is actually only a group who organise a non-profit event for the promotion of sports worldwide, right? What's a trademark if they're not actually trading in anything after all.

The Olympics haven't been non-profit in many years. (I'm sure they're officially non-profit for tax purposes, but not in the "we don't make money at this" sense).

For instance, between 2005-2008, the IOC (home of "Olympics, Inc.") generated nearly six billion dollars in revenue [businessinsider.com]. And remember, the terms of hosting the Games is that you, not they, are responsible for any and all cost overruns.

There's plenty of reading out there showing the real reasons why cities and countries bid for the Five Ring Circus. (Va

Vatican in chaos after butler arrested for leaks

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? An already sordid scandal over leaked Vatican documents took a Hollywood-like turn Saturday with confirmation that the pope's own butler had been arrested after documents he had no business having were found in his Vatican City apartment.

The detention of butler Paolo Gabriele, one of the few members of the papal household, capped one of the most convulsive weeks in recent Vatican history and threw the Holy See into chaos as it enters a critical phase in its efforts to show the world it's serious about complying with international norms on financial transparency.

The tumult began with the publication last weekend of a book of leaked Vatican documents detailing power struggles, political intrigue and corruption in the highest levels of Catholic Church governance. It peaked with the inglorious ouster on Thursday of the president of the Vatican bank. And it concluded with confirmation Saturday that Pope Benedict XVI's own butler was the alleged mole feeding documents to Italian journalists in an apparent bid to discredit the pontiff's No. 2.

"If you wrote this in fiction you wouldn't believe it," said Carl Anderson, a member of the board of the Vatican bank which contributed to the tumult with its no-confidence vote in its president, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi. "No editor would let you put it in a novel."

The bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, issued a scathing denunciation of Gotti Tedeschi in a memorandum obtained Saturday by The Associated Press. In it the bank, or IOR by its Italian initials, explained its reasons for ousting Gotti Tedeschi: he routinely missed board meetings, failed to do his job, failed to defend the bank, polarized its personnel and displayed "progressively erratic personal behavior."

Gotti Tedeschi was also accused by the board of leaking documents himself: The memorandum from the Institute for Religious Works, as the bank is known, said he "failed to provide any formal explanation for the dissemination of documents last known" to be in his possession.

In an interview with the AP, Anderson stressed that the latter accusation was independent of the broader "Vatileaks" scandal that has rocked the Vatican for months. But he stressed: "It is not an insignificant issue."

Gotti Tedeschi hasn't commented publicly about his ouster or the reasons behind it, saying he has too much admiration for the pope to do so. He also hasn't been arrested, avoiding the fate that befell Gabriele.

The 46-year-old father of three has been in Vatican detention since Wednesday after Vatican investigators discovered Holy See documents in his apartment. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Gabriele had met with his lawyers and that the investigation was taking its course through the Vatican's judicial system.

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, has often been seen by Benedict's side in public, riding in the front seat of the pope's open-air jeep during Wednesday general audiences or shielding the pontiff from the rain. In private, he is a member of the small papal household that also includes the pontiff's private secretaries and four consecrated women who care for the papal apartment.

Lombardi said Gabriele's detention marked a sad development for all Vatican staff. "Everyone knows him in the Vatican, and there's certainly surprise and pain, and great affection for his beloved family," the spokesman said.

The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time when it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven.

Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to comply with international norms to fight money laundering and terror financing.

The Vatican in July will learn if it has complied with the financial transparency criteria of a Council of Europe committee, Moneyval ? a key step in its efforts to get on the so-called "white list" of countries that share financial information to fight tax evasion.

Anderson acknowleged that the events of the last week certainly haven't cast the Holy See in the best light. And he said the bank's board appreciated that the ouster of its president just weeks before the expected Moneyval decision could give the committee pause.

"The board considered that concern and decided that all things considered it was best to take the action at this time," Anderson said. "These steps were taken to increase the IOR's position vis-a-vis Moneyval."

The Vatileaks scandal began in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi broadcast letters from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

Nuzzi, author of "Vatican SpA," a 2009 volume laying out shady dealings of the Vatican bank based on leaked documents, last weekend published "His Holiness," which presented a trove of other documents including personal correspondence to the pope and his secretary ? many of them painting Benedict?s No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in a negative light.

Nuzzi has said he was offered the documents by multiple Vatican sources and insisted he didn't pay a cent (euro) to any of them.

Gabriele was in Vatican custody and unavailable for comment. No known motive has come to light as to why Gabriele, if he is found to be the key mole, might have passed on the documents. Nuzzi declined to comment Saturday on whether Gabriele was among his sources.

Bertone, 77, has been blamed for a series of gaffes and management problems that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials.

"For some time and in various parts of the church, criticism even by the faithful has been growing about the lack of coordination and confusion that reign at its center," Cardinal Paolo Sardi, the former No. 2 official in the Vatican secretariat of state, wrote to the pope in 2009, according to the letter cited in "His Holiness."

Anderson, who heads the Knights of Columbus, a major U.S. lay Catholic organization, said he was certain the Holy See would weather the storm and that the Vatican bank, at least, could move forward under a new leader with solid banking credentials as well as a desire to show off the bank's transparency.

"I hope this will be the beginning of a new chapter for the IOR and part of that chapter will be restoring the public image of the IOR," he told AP. "I think we have a good story to tell."

Hunger returns to Africa, stalking 1M children

GOUDOUDE DIOBE, Senegal (AP) ? It's 10 a.m., and the 2-year-old is still waiting for breakfast. Aliou Seyni Diallo collapses to his knees in tears and plops his forehead down on the dirt outside his family's hut.

Soon he is wailing inconsolably and writhing on his back in the sand. A neighbor spots him, picks him up easily by one arm, and gives him a little uncooked millet in a metal bowl. The toddler shovels it into his mouth with sticky fingers coated in tears and grime. The crying stops, for the moment.

Each day is now a struggle for the women of this parched village in north Senegal to keep hungry children at bay, as they search desperately for food. Aliou's mother can only recall one time in her life when it was worse ? and that was more than 20 years ago.

"I start a fire, put a pot of water on it and tell the children I am in the middle of preparing something," Maryam Sy, 37 and a mother of nine, says in a raspy voice. "In reality, I have nothing."

Here are the two most alarming things about Aliou's story: He lives in the richest country in the Sahel, and the worst is yet to come.

More than 1 million children under 5 in this wide, arid swath of Africa below the Sahara are now at risk of a food shortage so severe that it threatens their lives, UNICEF estimates. In Senegal, which is relatively stable and prosperous, malnutrition among children in the north has already surpassed 14 percent, just shy of the World Health Organization threshold for an emergency.

Hunger in this region is a lurking predator that never quite leaves, and comes back every year to pick off the weakest. Even in a non-crisis year, some 300,000 children die from lack of food across western and central Africa. All it takes is a drought and a failed harvest, and those who are now barely living on one meal a day will starve.

Since late 2011, aid groups have been sounding the alarm about how drought is once again devastating communities where children live perilously close to the edge. But not enough donations have come in.

The situation is worst in Niger, Chad and Mali, where political chaos has forced hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in places where people don't have enough to eat themselves. But in a worrisome sign, this time the crisis also threatens 20,000 children in northern Senegal ? little rag dolls with just enough energy to bury their faces in their mothers' dresses.

"If you don't get certain nutrients, your brain is damaged and you can never recover," said Martin Dawes, West Africa spokesman for the U.N. children's agency. "You are then obviously far more vulnerable to a reduction in your food bowl turning into acute and severe malnutrition."

Already the signs of damage are there.

Aliou's 3-year-old sister Fatimata and 8-year-old sister Kadja have orangish hair growing in at the roots ? a telltale sign of the protein deficiency that comes from eating just one bowl of porridge a day. The girls are neatly dressed, but their clavicles poke through their tops like hangers.

Haby, their 4-year-old sister, has streaks of orangish-blonde hair that frame her face, almost as blonde as the Cinderella cartoon character printed on her dusty T-shirt. Her mother worriedly smooths down the wisps around her braids. She does not know the culprit is lack of protein; she wonders if it's something in the water.

The U.N. World Food Programme serves lunch at school, but the Diallo sisters don't go. Their parents can't afford the school supplies.

___

It's noon in Goudoude Diobe, where women traditionally spend hours stewing the midday meal. But there is no smell of cooking vegetables or spices, no clanging of multiple pots ? only the sound of roosters crowing and children crying.

Down a dusty trail, Samba Bayla's sister-in-law is starting to cook the only meal of the day for a family of 10, usually eaten around 2 p.m. She displays a small bowl of uncooked millet and another bowl with just a few small dried fish that altogether would fit inside a pair of clasped hands.

The knobby-kneed children crowd inside a building where the water's boiling, despite the scalding heat and heavy smoke. The midday temperatures here soar to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius), and it's been a month since the restless children last ate meat, at a neighbor's wedding.

"The situation is difficult but there is nothing we can do," says Bayla. "We tell them just a few hours more."

It's not supposed to be this way in Senegal, a country of more than 12 million people where sushi bars dot the seaside capital. Still, most Senegalese live in rural areas, their lives and livelihoods beholden to the right recipe of rain.

Here in the northeast region of Matam, the drought couldn't have come at a worse time. The country is already battling high food prices. And because of the global economic downturn, fewer Senegalese in this region have family members working abroad and sending money back home.

When the rains here came late this year, they were sporadic at best. Crops failed, and the extra food stored for emergencies has been eaten. The next planting season is still months away.

Bayla grew millet and sorghum, while his wife sometimes made 1,000 francs ($2) selling incense. But grain production was down 36 percent over last year across Senegal. And those who want to buy millet after their own crops failed are paying 27 percent more compared to 2011.

"You are faced basically with households that have less of a harvest compared to what they usually have, and they are facing higher prices on the market," said Ingeborg Maria Breuer, Senegal's representative and country director for the U.N. World Food Programme.

On the dusty sand roads that lead to remote villages, goats stand on their hind legs to eat the only vegetation in sight ? thorny acacia trees.

The lucky villagers have relatives working in the capital of Dakar, or abroad in Europe. But even work there is harder to find; a job may only last a few months, so the amount trickling back to these rural communities has decreased considerably.

In better times, there was a vegetable garden in Goudoude Diobe, with cabbage and eggplants for a community of nearly 1,300 people. Families grew enough millet, sorghum and corn to feed the village and its 250 children.

Now most here, even the breast-feeding mothers, eat only a bowl of rice once a day. If they are lucky, it is cooked with oil.

___

What should have been dinnertime already has passed, and now Kadja Dembel Ba calculates that she needs to keep her children busy for at least two more hours.

Today she was lucky. She walked several hours to lug some rice back from the nearby town to her village, Fass, for her seven children.

But as she looks at her 3-year-old son Yaya Feyni, she knows it's not enough. While other boys play outside, he lies on a bed behind his mother, listless and pale. Yaya has always been small compared to his brothers, she says, and now he is sick and won't eat anything.

She tends to him while her 1-year-old son squirms in her lap, as her 5- and 7-year-olds hover nearby.

The family already has sold a cow to buy medicine for her husband, who is sick with a stomach ailment and cannot work. The drugs set the family back some 4,000 francs ($8) ? which could have bought them 10 kilograms of rice.

The stress of finding enough food for Kadja Dembel Ba's children seems unending. And by the time this lean season ends in a few months, there will be one more to feed, she says as she touches her pregnant belly.

On good days, the children in Fass will play with their friends until dark in the dusty village. Their stomachs, though, have not forgotten that no dinner was served.

It will be another restless night inside the family's thatched hut. Some of the children cannot sleep, Ba says. They are just too hungry.

Back in Goudoude Diobe, the wailing toddler's mother hopes for a few hours of peace before the night. Tomorrow, there will be no breakfast. There will be only the prayer she says every morning, asking God to help her family and her neighbors.

So far, it has not been answered.

(AP) ? Usain Bolt won the 100 meters in 10.04 seconds in the wind at the Golden Spike meet Friday, his first victory in Europe leading to the London Olympics.

The Jamaican had a slow start but pulled ahead in the final meters. He failed to improve his season best of 9.82 from a May meet in Jamaica. Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis finished second in 10.19, followed by Darvis Patton of the U.S. in 10.22.

"It's hard to explain," Bolt said. "I don't really know what went wrong."

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius failed to secure an Olympic spot after he was timed in 47.66 seconds in the 400, finishing eighth. Pistorius needs to run 45.30 or faster once more before June 30 to earn a trip to London in line with South Africa's Olympic criteria.

Before the race, Bolt said he was working on his notoriously slow start in hopes of bettering his world records in the 100 and 200 in London. Bolt won three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.

"At the start I didn't feel as explosive as I normally feel like," he said.

This was Bolt's sixth competition in Ostrava.

"I was looking to come here for a good time. I guess it's one of those days," he said. "I just never got going."

The runners had to start twice after Simon Magakwe false started. That was something familiar for Bolt, who failed to defend the world championship title in the 100 in Daegu, South Korea after he was disqualified for a false start.

But Bolt said that was not a problem for him in Ostrava.

"I did some starts and I was flying from the blocks so I said, Yeah this is good.' I can't tell you what happened."

Bolt will have another chance to lower his times in Diamond League meets in Rome on May 31 and Oslo, Norway, on June 7 before returning to Jamaica for the national trials.

In the meantime, he said he will seek advice from his coach.

"I have to look at the tape and see what went wrong and call my coach to explain to me what I did wrong," he said.

He plans to be back in Europe to run in the 200 at the Diamond League meet in Monaco on July 20, his last race before the Olympics start a week later.

Elsewhere, Olympic javelin champion Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic looked strong, winning with her best throw of 222 feet, 4 inches to delight the home crowd with the leading performance in the world this season. World champion Mariya Abakumova, who beat Spotakova at last year's worlds, was second at 211-1.

"It's a wonderful feeling," Spotakova said. "I was hoping to win but to achieve also the world leading (distance) and meet record is fantastic. I fulfilled my goals."

Renaud Lavillenie of France cleared 19-4 ? for the season's best in the men's pole vault, edging Karsten Dilla of Germany, who cleared 18-9 ?. Steven Lewis of Britain was third.

Dexter Faulk led an American sweep of the 110-meter hurdles in a personal best 13.13, followed by Jeff Porter and Ryan Wilson.

Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt of the U.S. dominated the men's 400 in 45.13, with Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic was second and Nery Brenes of Costa Rica third. In the men's 200, Wallace Spearmon of the U.S. won in 20.14, beating Marvin Anderson of Jamaica.

"I hoped to get quicker," Spearmon said. "But today was not the right day."

Veronica Campbell-Brown, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 200 from Jamaica, eased to victory in her season best 22.38, edging Americans Bianca Knight and Tiffany Townsend.

Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo cruised to victory in the women's 800 in 1:58.49, defeating another Olympic hopeful, former world champion Caster Semenya of South Africa, who was second in 2:00.80.

"Many athletes complained about the wind," Jelimo said. "Of course, everybody wants to do the best because it's so close to the Olympics. The conditions were the same for everyone."
