Coming To A Car Near You: Linux Goes Automotive, Signs Up ...

If, one day, we really are all going to be carted around in driverless cars from the likes of Google and others, then we may as well have some apps on board to keep us occupied. Today, the Linux Foundation announced that it was throwing its hat into the car-apps ring, with the creation of the Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup. Early sign-ups among car companies include?Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota. Tech companies include Harman, Intel, NEC, NVIDIA, Samsung, and Texas Instruments, along with Tizen, the Linux-based platform backed by Samsung and Intel.

The Linux Foundation is not exactly an early mover here. We?ve already seen ?car of the future? odes from the likes of?Ford?and Honda?? not to mention Google ? even some suggestions that Apple is working on concepts, too. The point with the Linux news, it seems, is to try to keep it relevant in that wider picture of development, and to try impart some standards in the process.

Members of the group will work together on Linux-based standards for devices and subsequent services to run on them, with some early emphasis on apps for in-vehicle infotainment and ?instrumentation cluster? (the technical term for all the different gauges you use to monitor speed, distance, water levels and more; car diagnostics).

?Carmakers can use Linux and open source technologies to accelerate innovation,? the group notes it in its release, pointing out that some $10 billion has already been invested in the platform to date.

Interestingly, Tizen, the Linux-based OS spearheaded by Samsung and Intel about a year ago, is also making an appearance here. Tizen will be working with this new automotive workgroup to create a bridge for apps to work across the two. Samsung had been planning to launch a Tizen phone this year, but this has apparently now been pushed back to some time in 2013. It?s interesting to wonder whether relationships like this one will help push the Tizen agenda at a company still making the bulk of its smartphone revenues from Android ? or whether this is actually a sign that Samsung is still sticking by Tizen after all.

The Linux Foundation says that it will also be opening the door for further collaboration ?among the?Linux kernel community, other open source software communities and the automotive industry.? It also notes that it is already supporting other efforts like the?GENIVI Alliance and the W3C workshop on Web and Automotive.

As with mobile devices, achieving scale for automotive projects is an essential part of keeping costs down and making solutions usable as widely as possible.??A community distribution for automotive Linux is essential,? said Ken-ichi Murata, project GM, Toyota Motor Corporation, in a statement. ?There are a core set of requirements specific to the automotive industry, and collaborative development can help meet those needs faster and more efficiently.?

Trulia prices IPO of 6 million shares at $17 each

(AP) ? Real estate website operator Trulia Inc. said Wednesday it has priced its planned initial public stock offering at $17 each, above its expected range.

The company and its shareholders plan to sell 6 million shares. At $17 apiece, the offering would raise $102 million.

Earlier this month, Trulia had estimated its shares would sell for $14 to $16 each. The $17 IPO price indicates solid demand for the offering.

Trulia itself aims to sell 5 million shares, and wouldn't receive proceeds from stockholders' sales of the remaining 1 million shares. The banks managing the IPO may buy another 900,000 shares if demand is high.

The stock is expected to begin trading Thursday on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker "TRLA."

The San Francisco company plans to use the net proceeds from the offering for working capital and general corporate purposes, along with the possible acquisitions of other businesses.

Trulia, which operates website Trulia.com and mobile apps, allows people to research home listings and neighborhoods, while helping real estate agents market their listings. Its database includes 4.5 million homes for sale and rent.

In the six months ended June 30, the site had 22 million unique visitors and 360,000 active real estate professionals, with 21,544 of those paying subscribers.

Most of the company's revenue comes from sales of subscription products to real estate professionals. Trulia also generates revenue from ads.

In 2011, the company posted a loss of $6.2 million on $38.5 million in revenue. In the six months through June 30, its loss came to $7.6 million on revenue of $29 million.

Long-term lab experiment traces a trait's reappearance

Big leaps in evolution are the products of tiny genetic changes accumulated over thousands of generations, a new study shows.

E. coli bacteria growing in a flask in a lab for nearly 25 years have learned to do something no E. coli has done since the Miocene epoch: eat a chemical called citrate in the presence of oxygen. Evolutionary biologists Zachary Blount and Richard Lenski of Michigan State University in East Lansing and their colleagues describe the molecular steps leading to the feat online September 19 in Nature.

The work demonstrates that although new traits seem to emerge in the blink of an eye evolutionarily speaking, those traits are actually the product of thousands of generations of genetic tweaks.

?The ability to be able to not just talk about how genes evolve, but to see it in action is just awesome,? says Bruce Levin, a population and evolutionary biologist at Emory University in Atlanta. ?This is really getting at the nitty-gritty of evolution.?

Teasing out the molecular details behind the evolution of citrate-eating E. coli may help researchers better understand evolution in other organisms.

Learning to eat citrate, also called citric acid, is as big an innovation for E. coli as developing eyes or wings would be for mulitcellular creatures, says evolutionary geneticist Paul Rainey of Massey University in Auckland, New Zealand, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n, Germany.

Ancestors of E. coli and other bacteria may once have been able to eat citrate when oxygen is around, but E. coli lost the ability at least 13 million years ago, Blount says. In fact, the inability to grow on citrate in oxygen-rich conditions is a defining characteristic of E. coli that helps distinguish them from other types of bacteria.

Twelve flasks, each containing an independently evolving population of E. coli, have been growing in Lenski?s lab for more than 56,000 generations. A low concentration of E. coli?s favorite food, the sugar glucose, keeps most of the populations in check. But around generation 33,000, one flask, designated Ara?3, suddenly became cloudy as the bacteria within developed the ability to gobble citrate, an acid-controlling chemical that is abundant in the growth solution.

The ability of the Ara?3 E. coli to chow down on the alternative food source took at least three steps to develop, carried out over more than 13,000 generations. That?s the equivalent of a quarter-million years worth of human evolution in just five to six years of growth time in the lab. Step one, which the researchers call potentiation, set the stage for developing the citrate-eating ability. Bacteria as far back as generation 20,000 had the potential to evolve into citrate eaters, Blount found in earlier experiments. After thoroughly examining genetic blueprints of multiple generations of bacteria for the new study, Blount and colleagues found that at least two mutations arose before generation 20,000 that set the stage for the citrate-eating ability to evolve, and those mutations probably interact with each other.

Step two, called actualization, was much more obvious; a stretch of DNA containing a dormant gene for moving citrate into cells was copied and the copy was inserted near the original gene. The copied and pasted version of the gene started producing the citrate-pumping protein again. Before the duplication, E. coli couldn?t bring citrate into their cells to eat it.

Even though the initial duplication happened sometime between generation 31,000 and 31,500, those bacteria only nibbled citrate. Step three, refinement, took another 1,500 to 2,000 generations (about a year in the lab, or 30,000 to 40,000 years worth of human evolution) before the bacteria could make full use of the new food source. Some of those refinements included making even more copies of the citrate-transporter gene. Four copies of the gene appears to be the ideal number.

A new telescope camera in Chile focused on mysterious dark energy has taken its first photos of extremely distant galaxies.

The images represent the first observations ? called "first light" ? of an instrument called the Dark Energy Camera that was eight years in the works.

"The achievement of first light through the?Dark Energy Camera?begins a significant new era in our exploration of the cosmic frontier," James Siegrist, associate director of science for high energy physics at the U.S. Department of Energy, said in a statement. "The results of this survey will bring us closer to understanding the mystery of dark energy, and what it means for the universe."

The Dark Energy Camera is designed to study this puzzle by mapping out the distant universe to more accurate pin down its current and past expansion rates.

"The Dark Energy Survey will help us understand why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, rather than slowing due to gravity," said Brenna Flaugher, project manager and scientist at Fermilab. "It is extremely satisfying to see the efforts of all the people involved in this project finally come together."

The new instrument ? a 570-megapixel camera ? took its first photos on Sept. 12, taking aim at a portion of the southern sky from atop a mountain in the Chilean Andes. The Dark Energy Camera was built at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Ill., and was installed on the Victor M. Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the southern branch of the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO).

Each photo by the camera can capture up to 100,000 galaxies as far away as 8 billion light-years.

"We're very excited to bring the Dark Energy Camera online and make it available for the astronomical community through NOAO's open access telescope allocation," said Chris Smith, director of the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory. "With it, we provide astronomers from all over the world a powerful new tool to explore the outstanding questions of our time, perhaps the most pressing of which is the?nature of dark energy."

In December, after the camera is tested, it will begin the Dark Energy Survey, the largest galaxy survey ever undertaken, by mapping one-eighth of the sky. Researchers estimate the survey should spot 300 million galaxies, 100,000 galaxy clusters and 4,000 exploding stars, called supernovas.
