The article details 35 ingredients that are present in a single chicken nugget from McDonald?s, including dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent used in Silly Putty and cosmetics, and

One gram of TBHQ can cause ?nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse,? according to A Consumer?s Dictionary of Food Additives. Five grams of TBHQ can kill you.

Sprinkle on thirteen other corn-derived ingredients, and you?re only about twenty shy as many ingredients as a single chicken nugget from McDonald?s. And you were using pulverized chicken skin and mechanically reclaimed meat for your chicken, right?

I?ve eaten these things, but thankfully was protected by the large amount of alcohol in my system at the time. That?s why I?m so darn healthy now!

I can?t help wonder where he came up with the kind of money it takes to open a restaurant, but then Breedlove is the cousin of local restaurateur Bruce Carey, so maybe? ?

Local celebrity bartender Jeffrey Morgenthahler must be a busy guy. He?s bar manager at Clyde Common, is working on his cocktail book, and, according to Portland Monthly, is going to be running a new ?speakeasy? style bar named Pepe Le Moko. The new venture is being built right below Clyde Common.

A small sandwich storefront, selling late-night bocadillo sandwiches (Spanish torpedo subs), filled with Olympic Provisions salumi and Mediterranean seafood staples like sardines and anchovies, is being installed off of SW 10th Ave as the entrance to Clyde Common?s secret underground bar.

Through the bocadillo shop and down a flight of stairs will be Pepe le Moko (christened after the French 1937 film by the same name), a 1000 square-foot, 30-seat bar encapsulating the film?s 1930s, French-Algerian vibe.

The KPAM radio show ?Simple Kitchen with Missy Maki? has escaped my notice until this summer, when they mentioned PFD several times. She does lots of interviews with butchers, chefs, distillers, brewers and winemakers, which makes for an interesting show. It?s on Sunday from 9-11am. I sent her an email asking about her background -

Where are the results of my Best Restaurants 2012 list? I?ve been so busy lately, trying to get back to all of them and get each one written up, it is taking forever! I?ve decided to start posting each restaurant as soon as I get it finished. This is better anyway, as then each one can post in a mini-review type list. At the end I will round them all up. GOP VP pick's Medicare plan back in spotlight

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Paul Ryan's blueprint for Medicare could prove as polarizing in the campaign as President Barack Obama's health care overhaul has been. Even Mitt Romney may not want to go there.

Romney's new running mate has built a strong reputation on Capitol Hill for bold ideas to restrain health care costs and federal spending overall. His centerpiece idea is to steer future retirees into private insurance plans, with a fixed payment from the government that may or may not cover as much of a retiree's costs as does the current program.

Ryan, a conservative Wisconsin congressman and chairman of the House Budget Committee, calls his idea "premium support." Democrats call it a voucher plan. In theory, Ryan's plan could work, economists say. But the devil's in the details. Lots of them, and yet to be ironed out.

Ryan would also turn Medicaid over to the states, and sharply limit the growth of future spending on that safety net program. Between them, Medicare and Medicaid cover about 100 million people, touching nearly every American family in some way.

While expressing support broadly, Romney has yet to spell out where he stands on specifics of his running mate's proposals. And that could get tricky.

Mindful of the risks, Romney put gentle but unmistakable distance between his agenda and Ryan's hot-potato budget proposals on Sunday, a day after announcing his running mate's selection. The presidential candidate singled out Ryan's work "to make sure we can save Medicare." But Romney never said whether he embraced that plan himself. During the Republican primary, Romney had called Ryan's budget a "bold and exciting effort" that was "very much needed."

Democrats wouldn't let them off the hook, criticizing the "Ryan-Romney" Medicare plan at every turn.

"From the standpoint of public understanding, the Romney-Ryan ticket has a hill to climb," said health economist Joe Antos of the business-oriented American Enterprise Institute. "I think they can do it, but it's going to require some explaining. I think there are a lot of independents who are going to be nervous."

Seniors vote at higher rates than younger voters, and Medicare matters to them. Concern about Medicare cuts in Obama's health care law helped drive older voters into the Republican camp in the 2010 congressional elections, delivering control of the House to the GOP.

"This puts Medicare in play as a central issue in the campaign," said John Rother, president of the National Coalition on Health Care, a nonpartisan group representing a broad swath of players in the health care system.

The political sensitivities are clear. Polls find that Americans lean heavily on Medicare to help keep them secure after retirement and are suspicious of proposed alternatives, such as Ryan's plan. Surveys also give Democrats an edge over Republicans when people are asked which party people most trust to handle Medicare. Democrats held a 48 percent-39 percent advantage on that issue in a June 2011 AP-GfK poll.

In an interview Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney and Ryan both offered words meant to reassure the elderly.

America is about more choices, Romney said, and "that's how we make Medicare work down the road." He said the program won't change for seniors currently counting on the program. Ryan pitched in that his mother is a "Medicare senior in Florida."

For the most part, Ryan's plan would not directly affect people now in Medicare. One exception: In repealing Obama's health care law, Ryan would re-open the Medicare prescription coverage gap called the doughnut hole.

Under his plan, people now 64 and younger would go into a very different sort of Medicare. Upon becoming eligible, they would receive a government payment that they could use to pick a private insurance plan or a government-run program like traditional Medicare. The payment would be indexed to account for inflation, and that could be a problem if health care costs race ahead of the inflation rate.

The private plans would be regulated by the government, and low-income people, as well as those with severe health problems, would get additional assistance. People who pick plans with relatively generous benefits would pay more out of their own pockets.

The transformation would mirror the shift in workplace pension plans taking place over the last 20 years. Medicare would start looking more like a 401(k) plan than a plan that provides open-ended coverage for a set of benefits.

Ryan would also gradually raise the Medicare eligibility age from the current 65 to 67. In more general terms, Romney has also spoken of providing "generous" but undetermined subsidies to help future retirees buy private insurance, or let them have the option of traditional Medicare. He's also endorsed a gradually increasing age to qualify for benefits.

Some prominent Democrats have supported Ryan's general approach, even teaming up with him on different versions of his proposal. The GOP-led House has passed budgets written by Ryan two years in a row.

Backers say the result of his Medicare plan would be a more affordable and sustainable program, both for taxpayers and beneficiaries. Currently, Medicare's giant trust fund for inpatient care is projected to run out of money in 2024.

But critics see a massive cost shift to beneficiaries.

"The only way to drive real savings is to set a lid on the growth in the voucher," said Democratic economist Judy Feder. "That most likely means shifting costs to beneficiaries, not controlling costs."

Antos, however, called the latest version of Ryan's proposal a "reasonable plan" that "provides a decent benefit for people."

In an analysis earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said some of the effects of Ryan's plan "would of necessity be a great deal stronger" than current law, which includes Medicare cuts in Obama's health care law yet to take place.

Under the most likely current budget scenario, Medicare spending for the typical 66-year-old would rise to $9,600 in 2030, or about 75 percent more than now, the CBO projected.

But under Ryan's plan, spending would rise more slowly to $7,400, or about 35 percent more than current levels.

That difference would result in a cost shift of thousands of dollars to individual retirees, critics say.

Under the previous version of Ryan's plan, a typical 65-year-old retiree would have been responsible for about two-thirds of his or her health care costs in 2030.

Ryan's proposal for turning Medicaid into a block grant program for the states would also have far-reaching consequences. It sharply reduces the future size of the program relative to the overall economy, the CBO said.

Even if states can run Medicaid more efficiently, they'd still face the difficult choice between cutting the program or pouring more of their own money into it, the CBO said.

China, Koreas are big winners in London

China proved they've arrived as a genuine Olympic super-power, and both Koreas impressed -- but Japan were top of the flops among Asian countries at the London Games.

China may not have repeated their feats of Beijing 2008, when they topped the medals table for the first time, but with 38 golds their presence in the top two, behind the United States, was never in doubt.

South Korea were the only other Asian team in the top 10. North Korea, finishing 20th, had their best Games in 20 years, Hong Kong celebrated cycling silver and Singapore won their first individual medal in 52 years.

India couldn't follow Beijing by claiming their second individual gold, but they finished with two silver medals and four bronze -- their highest individual total.

Much as expected, China's divers and badminton and table tennis players missed just two gold medals between them, and their weightlifters hoisted five titles at London's ExCeL.

But China's shooters were off-target compared to Beijing, winning only two golds, and their gymnasts dropped from seven victories in 2008 to three on the London apparatus.

China's track hopes went up in smoke when 110m hurdler Liu Xiang, the 2004 champion, heart-breakingly limped out of the heats for the second Games running with a career-threatening Achilles tendon tear.

But his brave hop down the track to the finish line, symbolic kiss of the last hurdle, and embrace by his waiting competitors, was one of the Games' most memorable images.

Meanwhile Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen, 16, led China to their best performance in the pool, claiming two wins and a world record each as the team broke through with five titles in one of the Olympics' top-tier events.

Sun became China's first male Olympic swimming champion in the 400m freestyle, and then broke the 1500m world record for the second time in a year.

Ye set a new mark in the women's 400m medley and also won the 200m medley, while Jiao Liuyang won the women's 200m butterfly. Unproven doping speculation surrounding Ye was angrily dismissed by Sun.

"People think China has so many gold medals because of doping and other substances, but I can tell you it is because of hard work," said Sun.

"It is all down to training and hard work that we have results. Chinese are not weaker than those in other countries."

China, South Korea and Indonesia were also embroiled in one of the Games' worst scandals, when eight badminton players were disqualified for trying to lose group ties to secure easier quarter-finals.

South Korea's peerless archers, included the legally blind Im Dong-Hyun, hit the bull's-eye with three out of four gold medals, and their shooters added three more at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

They had two more in judo and two in fencing -- but none for Shin A-Lam, whose tearful, hour-long protest over her loss in the women's epee semis won sympathy and media coverage, but no Olympic medal.

North Korea's Games made an unpromising start when their women's footballers were pictured next to the South Korean flag on a stadium big screen, prompting a lengthy protest.

But tiny, 1.52m (five foot) weightlifter Om Yun-Chol put them on the gold trail when he lifted three times his bodyweight to win the 56kg category with a world record-equalling 293kg.

Kim Un-Guk and Rim Jong-Sim also lifted their way to gold at the ExCeL venue, while An Kum-Ae got judo gold on the opening weekend as North Korea matched their best ever haul of four titles at Barcelona 1992.

Japan, who are bidding to host the Games in 2020, had high hopes of emulating their record total of 16 gold medals. But after a near-wipeout in the judo, they ended with just seven.

South Korea rubbed salt into the wound when they beat Japan, their fiercest rivals, 2-0 for men's football bronze.

South Korea's Park Jong-Woo celebrated by waving a politically sensitive banner laying claim to an island group claimed by both countries. He was later barred from collecting his medal.

Sarah Lee Wai-Sze pedalled to Hong Kong's first cycling medal, bronze in the keirin, and China-born Feng Tianwei ended Singapore's half-century wait for an individual medal with bronze in the women's table tennis.

Malaysia got their first diving medal after Pandelela Rinong's bronze in the 10m platform, and there was a wave of sympathy for badminton star Lee Chong Wei, who fell just short of claiming the country's first gold.

Indonesia won two weightlifting medals, but nothing in badminton for the first time in 20 years, and Thailand had medals in boxing, taekwondo and weightlifting.

Adrian Peterson has taken a giant leap toward returning from a torn ACL.

The Vikings on Sunday removed Peterson from the Physically Unable to Perform list, which means that (barring a season-ending injury) he?ll be on the Week One roster.? But it doesn?t mean he?ll be playing when the Vikings host the Jaguars four weeks from today.

?I want to caution you, I know there are a lot of fans that are very optimistic and excited about seeing him back but for us it?s just a part of the process,? coach Leslie Frazier told the media, via comments distributed by the team.? ?It doesn?t mean a whole lot other than he?s done a great job in his rehab up to this point.? Off to the side with our strength coaches, with [trainer] Eric Sugarman and his staff and our medical staff explained to myself and [G.M.] Rick Spielman that the next step for him in the process would be to get integrated with his teammates and that?s just what it means.? He?s done everything he can do on the side, now it?s the next step in the process.? It doesn?t mean in the future he?s going to be lining up with our team in the opening game, we don?t know that.? We have a long time to determine that, this is just another step in the process.?

Under the terms of the new CBA (which is being honored in most cities not located in Washington state), Peterson must complete a two-day acclimation period without pads.

?[T]oday along with Monday he can do some individual drills, he can do our walk through, but he can?t do any of the padded stuff that we?re doing and we?re in pads right now, so it won?t be until Tuesday when we can put him in pads and let him go through some of the padded work that we?ll do,? Frazier said.? ?We?ll just keep going through the process.?

Peterson, who won?t be exposed to fully live contact during practice (Frazier pointed out that Peterson never is), embraced the opportunity to get closer to playing.

?I asked him, because we?ve been talking about this for a while,? Frazier explained,? ?I said, ?Now is your chance to say Coach, I was wrong, I don?t think I?m ready.?? He said, ?I?m not saying that, I?m ready I can?t wait to get out there.?? He?s pretty excited.?

Frazier, who said Peterson did a good job of lobbying for the ability to return to action, wouldn?t say whether Peterson will play in the preseason.? Even if Peterson is able to suit up and go as of Week One, it doesn?t mean he?ll be the workhorse.? The Vikings could choose to go with Peterson and Toby Gerhart for most if not all of the year, given that it could take Peterson a full season to fully recover from his December 24 injury.

Daredevil: Sand made NJ tightrope walk tricky

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Like anyone taking a walk on the beach, Nik Wallenda on Thursday found sand in places he didn't want it.

For Wallenda, it was on the tightrope he traversed some 100 feet over the beach.

"It felt really slippery," he said. So slippery that he considered doing the 1,300-foot walk barefoot.

But ultimately, Wallenda decided to keep on the buckskin and suede shoes his mother made him, and he completed the walk without any real difficulties.

For Wallenda, a member of the seventh generation of the famous daredevil family that's been putting on shows for two centuries, it was another in a long line of death-defying feats.

In June, he walked farther ? and higher up ? over Niagara Falls.

This time, though, he was unharnessed as seagulls flew by, a couple of banner-pulling planes zipped around, boats came to shore so their occupants could watch and all eyes on the beach ? save those of a few diligent lifeguards ? were looking at Wallenda high above.

Local officials estimated that 150,000 people saw him make the half-hour stroll, step by careful step, in person.

There were expected to be a boon for Atlantic City and the Tropicana Casino & Resort, which put on the event.

The crowd got a preview of the Wallenda Family Experience show opening at the casino on Sunday and the city got a spectacle of the sort it wants as it continues to deal with declining gambling revenue caused largely by the opening of casinos in nearby states.

Noreen Saggese, a teacher from Washington Township, N.J., was staying at the Tropicana with a cousin to celebrate her 59th birthday.

"There's no net and there's no harness," she said as she prepared to watch the walk. "It's thrilling."

After the walk, Wallenda, 33, had a rehearsal for his family's show. But first, he made time for a quick, calm news conference.

That helicopter buzzing overheard? Not an annoyance at all, he said.

The wind gusts, a couple of which he figured hit 20 mph or so? No big deal.

Where this walk ranks among his greatest hits? A diplomatic dodge: "I'll always remember this walk because of the crowd that turned up, that beautiful boardwalk and the sand."

His faith in the 90 or so helpers, most of them Tropicana employees weighing down support ropes to keep his high wire tight: Unwavering.

The same couldn't be said, exactly, for their faith in him. After he gave them instructions on their task, he asked if there were any questions.

Just one man shouted out a query: "Are you nuts?"

Wallenda didn't answer that one.
