Goodell: 34 teams likely if LA included

(AP) ? Commissioner Roger Goodell says if the NFL puts a team in Los Angeles, it is probable the league would expand to 34 franchises.

Appearing Thursday night on "Costas Live" on NBC Sports Network, Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams."

"We probably don't want to go to 33" teams by adding just one new club if a suitable stadium is built in the Los Angeles area, Goodell said. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems, including at least one club being off each week, and would create one division with five teams.

There has been speculation an LA stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell did not address that with host Bob Costas.

Goodell says there are several issues that must be solved in LA, particularly which of two current stadium proposals is best. He didn't suggest any timetable for returning to Southern California.

Goodell talked about head injuries and said the NFL was helping other sports and the military through its research into concussions.

"We're in a leadership position in sports. People look up to the National Football League," he said. "We do have a game that's rough. There are inherent risks playing it. But the second-highest incident of concussions is girls' soccer. So what we're learning about concussions in football is helping other sports. Not just every level of football, but every other sport.

"Now the NFL is sharing our research with the Defense Department to help treat our military personnel in the field."

Earlier in the program, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and several current and former players were asked about lawsuits against the league by ex-players who claim they weren't warned about or protected enough against brain trauma during their careers.

The Associated Press published a story Thursday based on interviews with a dozen former players who have filed suits against the league. What emerged was, at best, a depiction of a culture of indifference on the part of the league and its teams toward concussions and other injuries. At worst, there was a strong sense of a willful disregard for players' well-being.

"We have to protect our players," Kraft said. "The league is very strong in this area and I hope we are prolonging careers" with the NFL's concussion research."

Added Colts center Jeff Saturday, a member of the players' union executive board: "The reality is we don't know what kind of damage it is doing long term. It's the biggest problem we face in the NFL now."

0201norfolk Ten Things Every Appraisal Should Include

Getting an appraisal is an important part of the buying and selling process. An appraisal evaluates both the house itself and the current value based on recent sales information.Realtor? Robin Jones of Norfolk, NE explains the ten things an appraisal should include:

You must appraise real estate to sell it. If you have a Realtor that you trust, they can point you in the right direction.

Appraising is the science of determining the value of a home. Your real estate appraiser must be state-licensed and certified.

Don?t confuse a comparative market analysis with an appraisal. Realtors use CMAs to determine a realistic asking price. Your appraiser?s report will be much more detailed.

Here is what your appraisal should include:

* Details about the property with comparisons of up to three similar properties. * An evaluation of the real estate market in your area. * A listing of the features and characteristics of your home, including a description of the lot, exterior and foundation. * A visual assessment of your home, including approximate age, overall condition, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, etc. * A description of equipment in the kitchen and a description of the attic and garage, if applicable. * Materials in each room, such as floor covering and trim. * A listing of utility systems like heat and electricity. * Statements about issues that may decrease the property?s value. * Documentation of serious flaws. * An estimate of the value of the home.

If the appraisal uncovers unexpected problems, know that most problems are fixable. An appraisal is NOT a home inspection which takes an in-depth look at the structural soundness of your home. Remember, don?t panic if your appraisal is low, because a good Realtor will make the deal work.

Germany's Merkel urges China to use influence on Iran (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged China on Thursday to use its influence to persuade Iran to give up its nuclear weapons program, at the start of a three-day visit when she will also seek China's support for the ailing euro.

Merkel is expected to make the case for tighter sanctions on Iran, originally proposed by the United States and designed to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons. She said she has already had "long discussions" with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Iran sanctions.

"If we talk about the European sanctions against Iran, the question is how China can make better use of its influence to make Iran understand that the world must not have another power with nuclear weapons," Merkel told an audience at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Merkel's China visit illustrates the delicate nature of EU-China relations, where Europe pushes China to sacrifice its commercial interests to help on Iran while at the same time asking for its help in resolving a worsening debt crisis.

Indeed, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao appeared to reject the pressure to do more on Iran, telling journalists later in the day that China objected to Western nations politicizing the "normal commercial relationship" it has with the Islamic Republic, echoing language China has used before.

Wen also said that China was considering greater involvement in the stability funds that have been set up to help pull Europe out of its deepening debt crisis.

China, with its $3.2 trillion worth foreign exchange reserves, is often seen as a potential source for the funds that are needed to bail out some European governments.

RELUCTANT ON IRAN

Merkel said she hoped the U.N. Security Council could pass a unanimous resolution on the Iran issue.

The United States imposed the harshest sanctions on Iran when President Barack Obama, on December 31, signed into law sanctions on transactions involving Iran's central bank.

The European Union last week imposed a ban on the import, purchase or transport of Iranian oil.

China has long refused to support sanctions on Iran, although Wen Jiabao said last month that Beijing "adamantly opposes" Iran developing nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear program is for civilian use. China has much to lose by cutting back on Iranian oil purchases. Beijing imports 11 percent of its crude from the Islamic Republic, its third biggest supplier.

Merkel could urge Beijing to further cut its crude imports from Iran, a German source said earlier, but that is likely to go unheeded. Turning away that oil would mean paying a higher price to get it from another supplier.

"China opposes the use of nuclear energy for proliferation but believes it is possible to use it for peaceful purposes," said Li Xiangang, an former Chinese diplomat in Tehran who is now at the China Institute of International Studies.

"Energy sanctions against Iran will only cause world oil prices to rise and hurt the global economic recovery. That is why I think China is not supportive of further sanctions on Iran."

China would only act after the International Atomic Energy Agency sends inspectors to Iran, Li said.

A CALL FOR OPEN MARKETS

Merkel also pressed China to improve protection of intellectual property rights, calling on it to ensure that German businesses had reciprocal access to its markets.

That concern will likely be repeated when she travels to Guangzhou in southern China on Friday for a business summit. Merkel is accompanied by a number of German CEOs, who during a similar summit two years ago also pressed for more market access.

On Thursday, she toured an ancient alley in Beijing that is now home to shops and restaurants, one of the few to survive the razing of the centuries-old capital to build shopping malls and office blocks.

Germany enjoys strong exports to China, especially in machinery and high-tech products. But Chinese exports have eroded manufacturing in its European neighbors, and Chinese efforts to move up the value chain could also threaten German business in future.

For China, the visit is a chance to be briefed directly on the European crisis. In her speech, Merkel emphasized that European countries will need better fiscal discipline and more budgetary integration.

European countries will need to cut red tape and barriers to employment if they are to grow, she said.

Chinese leaders view Merkel -- and Germany -- as the definitive voice on the European crisis, in part because of Germany's economic strength compared with its European neighbors, analysts say.

Market fears over the fate of the euro zone economies have eased somewhat since the European Central Bank extended liquidity to banks in December, but serious fiscal and structural problems continue to undermine investor confidence in Europe, China's biggest export market.

House Democrats' Lyrics To 'We're So In Love With' Obama Al Green Parody Revealed

House Democrats recently sought to build off President Barack Obama's now-famous singing of a line from Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" by recording their own single, a longer parody of the song meant to express their appreciation for the president. The lawmakers recorded the Obama-based rendition and gave him a CD copy of it at the annual Democratic retreat in Maryland last month.

There's no audio yet (thankfully?), but here are the lyrics, recently provided to Politico.

"We're ... We're so in love with you ...

We're going to help you make it through ...

By turning the red states blue ...

You make us feel so darn proud ...

We want to shout it out loud ...

Let's bring the country together ...

Supporting you whether ... whether times are good or bad ... happy or sad

Let's bring the country together ...

Supporting you whether ... whether times are good or bad ... happy or sad

Let's ... Let's stay together."

Lyrics by Rep. John B. Larson (D-Conn.) and Terisa Griffin, with "apologies to Al Green."

FedEx employee charged for bomb joke on Army base (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? Prosecutors in Utah charged a FedEx driver with a threat of terrorism count over allegations he joked that a package he was delivering to a Utah Army base was likely a bomb.

Charges filed Wednesday in Salt Lake City show the deliveryman was dropping off a package on Sept. 20 addressed to an Army Corps of Engineers employee at Camp Williams.

Prosecutors say that when a woman asked him what it was, he replied that it was probably a bomb. Military police then evacuated 215 people from the building and the surrounding area.

The Deseret News identified the driver as 27-year-old Kevin Coleman.

Police say the man later told them his comment was a mistake.

He's charged with a third-degree felony count of threat of terrorism.

Israeli-Palestinian talks end with no progress: officials (Reuters)

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) -

Israeli-Palestinian talks aimed at reviving peace negotiations ended in Jordan Wednesday without achieving any progress and President Mahmoud Abbas plans to consult fellow Arabs on his next move, Palestinian officials said.

The options being considered by the Palestinians include pushing ahead with United Nations membership and reconciliation with the rival Islamist Hamas group -- moves opposed by Israel.

"The Israelis brought nothing new in these meetings," said one Palestinian official familiar with the talks. "We are now going to assess our options and will consult our brothers in the Arab League on February 4."

The talks came as part of a proposal by the Quartet of Middle East mediators - the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations - which set a three-month deadline last October for the two sides to make proposals on issues of territory and security.

The aim is to reach a peace deal by the end of this year.

The European Union foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, is on a regional visit to nudge Israelis and Palestinians to maintain the talks begun this month.

She has been seeking Israeli confidence-building measures for Palestinians, including freeing some prisoners and more freedom in areas of the West Bank held by Israel.

Israelis and Palestinians held five sessions of talks, in which the Israelis offered a document comprising 21 points that Abbas had dismissed as worthless.

Despite strong opposition from the United States and Israel, the Palestinian Authority applied to the U.N. Security Council last September for U.N. membership. But a committee to consider the application failed to reach consensus, and the Palestinians have not so far requested a formal vote in the council.

Peace talks foundered in late 2010 with Palestinians demanding that Israel suspend settlement building in the occupied West Bank, including Arab East Jerusalem.

Abbas also demanded that Israel agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state on all lands occupied in the 1967 Middle East war before resuming negotiations.

Israel has rejected both demands and said it was ready to resume negotiations immediately with no preconditions.
