Report: Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers have 'talked' about trade involving All-Star closer Joe Nathan

As part of his to-do list, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski has talked to nearly every club these past few weeks to get a better handle on who's available with the trade deadline looming.

The Texas Rangers were among the teams he spoke with. And, according to FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi, closer Joe Nathan was discussed.

Morosi reported late Sunday that the two clubs have discussed a trade involving Nathan, but said the Rangers are asking a lot for the 38-year-old.

And as a result, there is "no momentum toward a deal."

So what's the asking price for Nathan, who has suddenly become expendable with the return of reliever Joakim Soria?

The Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant suggested the team could target the Tigers' current setup man, Drew Smyly, in exchange for the six-time All-Star.

But given the depth of the Rangers' bullpen, a Nathan-for-Smyly swap doesn't make much sense for the Rangers, aside from it obviously offering financial relief.

Soria, who missed all of 2012, was activated from the disabled list in early July and could take over the closer role for Texas if Nathan were dealt. Texas pitcher Neftali Feliz is expected to return from Tommy John surgery next month, too. The bullpen appears set.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Rangers are seeking an established hitter in exchange for Nathan, who holds a team option for next year at $9 million. The option can turn into a mutual option if he finishes 55 games. So far, he's completed 39 games.

However, it appears the Rangers don't feel pressed to trade Nathan. According to Yahoo!'s Jeff Passan, Texas is strongly considering standing pat at the deadline.

My take? Don't get too worked up over the report. Dombrowski is simply performing due diligence by making the rounds. He called. He asked. He listened. He hung up. The end.
