Florida coach Will Muschamp goads Ohio State at SEC media days about NCAA violations

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The media days for the SEC are considered among the great circuses in college sports. Today, Ohio State was pulled into the tent.

Florida coach Will Muschamp referenced the Buckeyes, but didn't actually use the phrase ?Ohio State,? according to numerous reporters in attendance who put the remarks on Twitter. His comments were in regards to recent reports of Urban Meyer reporting Florida for a potential minor NCAA violation. Meyer denied he did it, but Ohio State later confirmed a team staffer read about a possible Florida misstep and alerted the NCAA.

?We appreciate our friends from Ohio making sure we follow NCAA rules,? Muschamp said, according to Sports Illustrated reporter Andy Staples, among others. ?They certainly know something about NCAA rules.?

Additionally, Muschamp also may have taken a page from the Brady Hoke playbook. Another media member's report on Twitter has Muschamp calling the Buckeyes "Ohio."

Maybe we should consider this the official start of football season.

They certainly know something about NCAA rules? It's understandable Muschamp is upset about Ohio State reporting Florida. But not every coach would have thrown in a remark about the Buckeyes' NCAA violations that were committed before Urban Meyer got to campus.

Sporting News on Muschamp-Meyer

Verbal sparring in July gets you ready for kickoff, doesn't it?

Meyer will have his chance to respond to the response when the Big Ten holds its media days in Chicago next Wednesday and Thursday. Certainly he'll be asked about it, just as Muschamp was asked about it today.

Everyone knows Ohio State will never have a rival like Michigan. But between Florida and Alabama, the Buckeyes have some new friends in the SEC. And it sure would be interesting to see them hash this out on the field.
